Job Description

The Infection Control Professional (ICP) - Construction, is a leader who provides infection control expert consultation throughout the planning, design, construction, renovation, post-construction and maintenance phases of infrastructure projects of all Unity Health Toronto sites. The primary goal is to reduce the risk of transmission of infectious agents and to prevent hospital acquired infections (HAI) associated with these activities. The Infection Control Professional (ICP) - Construction plays a key role from project conception through to execution and post-construction activities, ensuring that IPAC principles are integrated into facility design and operational readiness. The ICP will report to the Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) manager with the following responsibilities. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide infection prevention and control expert consultation and recommendations as it relates to health care facility planning, design, renovation, construction, commissioning and maintenance to ensure that IPAC principles and best practices, CSA and other appropriate standards are appropriately considered. Participate in interdisciplinary planning and design meetings, apply relevant standards, evidence and best practices during functional programming, design development, and operational planning. Architectural drawing review (blue prints) and assessment to ensure relevant standards, evidence and best practices are applied. Hoarding plan reviews, conduct inspections and provide feedback to maintain a safe hospital environment during construction activities. Infection Control Risk Assessment and Permit approvals. Develop, coordinate and perform surveillance activities including but not limited to construction related surveillance. Develop and facilitate relevant education and training to internal and external personnel. Participating in research activities that will advance the practice of Infection Control at UHT. Assess and respond to exposures and outbreaks as part of a multidisciplinary team. Participate in the development, communication and implementation of IPAC policies and procedures, current best practice guidelines and applicable standards. Provide consultative advice, feedback and reports to internal and external stakeholders. Provide services on an on-call basis including occasional evening and weekend on-call. Develop and facilitate ongoing IPAC education for staff, physicians, students, volunteers and patients. Lead and collaborate on quality improvement initiatives. Implement infection control recommendations as determined by the Infection Prevention and Control Committee. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders such as Planning and Engineering department and support all levels of staff, leaders and professional staff with IPAC expertise, Perform cross-functional and/or other duties consistent with the job classification, as required. QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor''s degree in health related discipline (e.g. nursing, laboratory, epidemiology, and other allied health) or equivalent combination of education and experience; Master''s degree preferred; Recent Infection Prevention Control experience in a health care setting; acute care experience preferred Current certification from the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology (CBIC) preferred or a commitment to completing certification within the first two years of hire. Current member of IPAC Canada preferred. Experience with managing construction and renovation projects in relation to infection control. Knowledge in current Canadian Standards Association (CSA) standards as they relate to IPAC Experience with review of architectural drawings, specifications, schematic and detailed design from the IPAC perspective Experience with performing Infection control Risk Assessments (ICRA) and preventative measures analysis Experience reviewing Infection Control Plans submitted by contractors and providing feedback as needed Experience performing hoarding inspections prior to, during and before completion of construction projects Demonstrates strong IPAC knowledge and experience in related areas of infectious diseases, microbiology, epidemiology, disinfection/sterilization; outbreak management, HVAC & construction Demonstrated skills in coaching, mentoring, adult education and teaching Demonstrated effective written/verbal communication and interpersonal skills required Excellent problem solving and conflict resolution skills Ability to work under pressure Excellent time management and project management skills Exercise initiative and good judgment with ability to multi-task Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills Excellent problem solving and conflict resolution skills Strong computer skills with the ability to learn how to use new software programs. Proficiency with Microsoft Office required and intermediate to advanced MS Excel skills preferred Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with others Flexible team player capable of working both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively within a team environment. Knowledge of applicable legislative, UHT and/or departmental policies Competent in quality improvement and change management techniques/methodology Be able to travel to multiple sites and off-site locations throughout the day.
