Physical Plant Thunder Bay Full-time Contract Overview Reporting to the Facilities manager the Maintenance Skilled Trades role is responsible for ensuring that buildings, equipment, and systems remain in good working condition. Responsibilities Perform skilled and semi-skilled work relative to the maintenance and repair of university buildings, equipment, furniture and vehicles Perform skilled and semi-skilled work in trades such as carpentry and general construction, painting, locksmithing and door and hardware repairs, welding and masonry work. Report to the lead hand in Building Maintenance and assist in the solution of problems related to the operation and usage of the Physical Plant buildings, equipment, furniture and vehicles. Maintains appropriate work records. Performs other related duties as required. Qualifications Grade 12 education and completion of tradesman qualifications as a carpenter. Commercial hardware and locksmith experience. Several years of directly related experience of recognized practices of a particular trade Knowledge of recognized practices and techniques and the use of tools, equipment common to the trade Ability to perform manual work. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to work with minimum supervision Ability to deal courteously with staff, students and the public One-person unassisted lifting of 50 lbs. on a regular basis Ability to perform heavy manual work and to work on ladders, scaffolds, etc. Climbing of ladders on a regular basis Good hand dexterity (pinning for locksmith work) Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills Possess a valid driver''s license Familiarity with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, its regulations and other health and safety regulations and standards Must have a good employment record Must have a good record of attendance and punctuality Lakehead University is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment and welcomes applications from all qualified individuals including women, racialized persons, Indigenous people, persons with disabilities, and other equity-seeking groups.
