Who are we looking for? We are seeking two Health & Safety Advisors to join our Health & Safety team. This role is ideal for a collaborative professional who is passionate about building a strong safety culture, supporting leaders and employees, and ensuring safe, healthy workplaces across all Town operations. Reporting to the Manager, Health & Safety, the Health & Safety Advisor provides subject-matter expertise, coaching, guidance, and program leadership to prevent workplace injuries and illness, strengthen safety practices, and ensure compliance with legislative and COR requirements. What are some of the duties of the Health and Safety Advisor? Lead continuous improvement of the Town''s Health & Safety Program, ensuring alignment with AMHSA standards, COR requirements, and Alberta Occupational Health & Safety legislation Develop, review, and implement safety policies, procedures, and business processes Coach and advise leaders on occupational health and safety issues, ensuring alignment with policy, legislation, and collective agreements Conduct internal and external health and safety program audits and support stakeholders through the process Lead workplace incident investigations, identify root causes, recommend corrective actions, and support WCB processes Support and participate in Health & Safety Committees, sharing trends, metrics, best practices, and legislative updates Provide regular safety updates to leadership, including emerging risks and recommendations Support early and safe return-to-work initiatives in collaboration with Human Resources and WCB Build strong relationships with internal teams, agencies, associations, and service providers to advance safety priorities Qualifications, Skills and Abilities Education and Experience: Required: Minimum 35 years of experience in occupational health and safety, preferably in municipal or public-sector environments Completion of a recognized Occupational Health & Safety certificate or diploma program Preferred: Completion of a diploma or degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Public Health, Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field Advanced education in Safety Management Systems, Risk Management, or Occupational Hygiene Post-secondary education with specialization in safety leadership, regulatory compliance, or workplace wellness Coursework or formal training in disability management, return-to-work coordination, or WCB case management Training or education in emergency management, incident command systems (e.g., ICS training) Skills and Abilities: Required: Strong relationship-building skills and collaborative, interest-based approach Strong analytical, decision-making, and risk-assessment skills Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills Ability to lead difficult conversations constructively Ability to develop business cases and support program implementation Experience interpreting safety legislation and applying it operationally Ability to manage multiple priorities and lead projects Proficient computer skills, with experience using safety systems an asset Preferred: Experience supporting health & safety in a unionized, multi-departmental environment Demonstrated ability to influence, coach, and build credibility with leaders and front-line employees Strong facilitation skills with experience leading safety committees, training sessions, or safety meetings Experience developing and implementing safety programs, audits, and continuous improvement initiatives Advanced incident investigation skills, including root-cause analysis methodologies Familiarity with AMHSA COR auditing standards and municipal sector best practices Strong data analysis and reporting skills, including the ability to interpret trends and recommend strategies Ability to manage sensitive and complex safety matters with tact, confidentiality, and professionalism Experience collaborating with WCB and supporting early/modified return-to-work programs Practical understanding of risk management, hazard assessments, and regulatory compliance strategies Certifications, Licenses and/or Designations: Required: A valid Alberta Class 5 Driver''s License Preferred: Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP, CRST) or active progress toward designation AMHSA Peer Auditor certification FOIP Certification Participation in safety training programs considered an asset Cochrane is committed to providing a healthy and safe work environment for all employees, which means that everyone is responsible for health and safety.
