The Role We are seeking hands-on, project-focused, and driven Mechanical Engineer to assume a critical role in the detailed design, fabrication, installation, and commissioning of our demonstration plant. The successful candidate will be an integral member of the project team responsible for the physical build-out of the facility, translating complex process requirements into robust, safe, and reliable physical infrastructure. This position demands a comprehensive understanding of mechanical design principles, coupled with proven expertise in on-site project execution, contractor supervision, and vendor management. Key Responsibilities 1. Detailed Equipment Design: Execute detailed mechanical designs and generate technical specifications for critical process equipment, including agitators, pumps, filtration systems, heat exchangers, and tanks. 2. Materials Selection: Critically evaluate and select appropriate materials, including but not limited to various alloys, non-metallic composites, and specialized linings, based on process fluid characteristics, operating temperatures, pressures, and anticipated corrosion/erosion mechanisms to maximize system longevity and minimize maintenance cycles. 3. Piping Systems: Support the design and engineering of the plant''s piping systems, ensuring optimal flow dynamics, material compatibility, and structural integrity. This responsibility encompasses: Hydraulic and Line Sizing Calculations: Perform detailed hydraulic analyses to accurately size all process, utility, and safety-related lines. This includes calculating pressure drops, flow velocities, and determining the appropriate pipe diameter to ensure efficient and safe transport of fluids while adhering to process requirements and minimizing energy consumption. Stress Analysis and Support Design: Oversee and perform advanced piping stress analysis to account for thermal expansion, sustained loads (weight, pressure), occasional loads (wind, seismic), and dynamic loads. Based on these analyses, design robust and compliant pipe supports (hangers, anchors, guides, snubbers) to manage pipe movement, prevent excessive stress on equipment nozzles, and maintain structural integrity. Code Adherence and Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all design, fabrication, examination, inspection, and testing activities strictly comply with the requirements of the ASME B31.3 Process Piping code, along with other applicable industry standards and local regulatory mandates. This includes meticulous review and approval of piping specifications, isometrics, general arrangement drawings, and pressure testing procedures. 4. Plant and System Layout: Collaborate closely with the Mechanical Designer to optimize the 3D model for operability, safety, and maintenance access. 5. Procurement & Vendor Management: Develop comprehensive technical specification packages (RFPs/RFQs), evaluate vendor proposals, and provide technical oversight to vendors throughout the fabrication, quality assurance, and delivery phases. 6. Installation Oversight: Serve as the on-site technical authority for all mechanical installation activities, managing and directing specialized contractors (e.g., millwrights, pipe fitters) to ensure all work meets engineering specifications and safety protocols. 7. Commissioning and Operational Support: Provide expert, hands-on mechanical troubleshooting and support during the critical phases of pre-commissioning, hot commissioning, and early plant operation. 8. Documentation: Prepare, maintain, and manage essential project documentation, including equipment lists, data sheets, technical specifications, and contributions to the final As-Built drawing package. Qualifications Bachelor''s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution. P.Eng. designation, or eligible to register as an E.I.T. in Nova Scotia. 3-7+ years of progressive mechanical engineering experience, preferably gained within a plant, heavy industrial, or EPC project environment (e.g., hydrometallurgy, chemical processing, mining, water treatment, or oil & gas). Proficiency in 2D and 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD Plant 3D), and ability to interpret and utilize Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs). Deep technical knowledge of fluid dynamics, rotating equipment (pumps, compressors, agitators), and industrial piping systems. Experience with material selection and corrosion mitigation in aggressive chemical environments is a highly valued asset. Proven ability to effectively manage complex vendor relationships and oversee various contractors. A professional, results-oriented demeanour with the ability to transition seamlessly between engineering design functions and on-site project execution in a fast-paced environment.
