Position Summary Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Care (DOC) provides clinical leadership and strategic direction for all nursing and resident care services within our long-term care home. The DOC ensures the delivery of safe, high-quality, resident-centred care in compliance with British Columbia legislation, Health Authority and professional practice requirements, as well as Columbus Residence Mission, Vision and Values. This role leads interdisciplinary care teams, oversees clinical operations and staff performance, promotes continuous quality improvement, and fosters a culture of compassion, accountability, and resident safety. An ability to communicate effectively with residents and their families, staff and others in the community is essential. The Director of Care acts as a professional role model for all staff. Key Responsibilities 1. Clinical Leadership & Resident Care Provide leadership, accountability and oversight for all nursing and care services, including Assistant Director of Care, RNs, LPNs, care aides, and allied health staff and contractors. Acts as a clinical resource person/role model to all staff. Ensure safe, ethical resident care is delivered in accordance with best practices, evidence-based care practices, and resident-centred care principles. Oversee care planning, clinical assessments, clinical interventions, medication management, documentation, and outcomes for residents with complex health needs. Monitor clinical outcomes and implement quality improvement initiatives. Lead effective infection prevention and control practices and emergency preparedness. Manages outbreak situations as well as coordinates the Infection Control Program, Influenza Vaccination Program, and other clinical initiatives, including relevant staff education. Deals with all issues on a day-to-day basis for the care department including ensuring compliance with all reporting requirements. Analyze clinical data, incident reports, and trends to improve care outcomes. Lead quality improvement initiatives and promote innovation in care delivery. Collaborate with the Medical Coordinator, Physicians and Pharmacist. Oversee continuing education student placements with partner educational institutions including care aide and nursing practicums and preceptorships. Ensure the availability and manage the performance of contracted health service providers such as the dental hygienist, foot massage nurse, physiatrist, denturist and other related health providers. 2. Regulatory Compliance & Quality Assurance Ensure compliance with the BC Ministry of Health regulations, BC Community Care and Assisted Living Act, Residential Care Regulation, and health authority standards. Maintain current knowledge, applicable changes in regulation from both VCH and Licensing effectively implementing required courses of actions to meet standards of care for care of residents. Prepare and lead Licensing inspections and audits. Maintain standards consistent with BCCNM (BC College of Nurses and Midwives). Monitor clinical indicators, incidents, and risk management activities. Ensure adherence to privacy, consent, and ethical care standards. Develop, implement, review and update clinical policies and procedures on a regular basis. Ensure the clinical equipment and devices are in safe working condition and follows up as necessary. Reports any issues/concerns related to safety such as, but not limited to, suspected resident abuse, unsafe and hazardous conditions, sentinel and near miss events. 3. Staff Management & Development Lead, mentor, and supervise nursing staff and care teams. Recruit, coach, mentor, and evaluate nursing and care staff in collaboration with Human Resources. Foster a respectful, collaborative, inclusive, culturally safe and supportive work environment. Manage performance, attendance, and progressive discipline in a unionized setting. Provide staff with regular feedback regarding performance through probationary period and continuous performance evaluations. Support staff education, professional development, and competency requirements. 4. Resident & Family Engagement Oversee the admission process to ensure resident care needs can be met. Communicate effectively with residents, families, and caregivers, addressing concerns related to care delivery and promoting transparency. Oversee and monitor care conferences and interdisciplinary meetings. Champion resident and family engagement initiatives. Promote dignity, autonomy, and quality of life for residents 5. Operational & Administrative Duties In collaboration with Executive Director and Director, Finance & Corporate Services, develop and manage departmental budgets, staffing models, and resource allocation in alignment with funding agreements and organizational priorities. Optimize staffing models and schedules to meet resident care needs and budget parameters. Ensure web-based tools (PCC) are operational and accessible for ongoing documentation. Investigate incidents and completes documentation and reporting as required. Contribute to the development and implementation of organizational goals and strategic plans including participating in operational planning and continuous quality improvement initiatives. Support emergency preparedness and risk management initiatives. Participate in after-hours on-call schedule. Work collaboratively with physicians, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, allied health professionals and health authority partners. Participate in leadership committees and organizational planning initiatives. Performs other related duties as required. Qualifications Education & Experience Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required; Master''s degree in Nursing, Health Administration, or related field preferred Current full practicing registration in good standing as a Registered Nurse (RN) with the British Columbia College of Nursing and Midwives (BCCNM) Minimum 5 years of progressive nursing leadership experience, preferably in long-term care, geriatric or complex healthcare environments or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience Demonstrated experience in clinical leadership, staff management, quality improvement, and regulatory compliance Experience and ability working in a publicly funded and unionized environment preferred Skills & Abilities Knowledge of current applicable legislation, regulations and union collective agreements (BCNU/NBA and HEU/FBA). Strong clinical judgment, leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate diverse teams. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to engage stakeholders at all levels. Ability to develop and maintain effective interpersonal and productive working relationships and to communicate, direct, and coordinate staff in a cooperative and responsive manner. Strong conflict-resolution and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Ability to plan, analyze, problem solve, and lead within fiscal, contractual, physical, and human resources constraints. Knowledge of gerontology, dementia care and resident-centred care models. Demonstrate initiative to keep abreast of advances in geriatric health care administration and progressive care of the elderly through active participation in continuing education and professional self-development. Computer literacy and proficiency with electronic health records and clinical documentation systems. Point Click Care (PCC) experience preferred.
