Shift Engineer 2nd Class, Facilities Operations The University of Saskatchewan is a top researchintensive university in Canada, working across disciplines and communities to solve global challenges. The Facilities team supports teaching, learning, and discovery through operations, maintenance, and service across the campus. Primary Purpose Maintain the safe and efficient operation of the Central Heating & Cooling Plant, ensuring consistent steam and chilled water supply to the University and external agencies. Nature of Work Reporting to the Chief Engineer and supervised by the Maintenance Engineer, the Shift Engineer works a 5week rotating shift (days, nights, weekends, statutory holidays). The role includes supervising the Assistant Shift Engineer (Boiler Operator) and may backfill other positions as needed. The work is performed in a multitrade environment under variable conditions, requiring moderate to heavy physical effort and compliance with safety protocols. Typical Duties & Accountabilities Operate and monitor the plant in accordance with standards set by the Chief Engineer, Maintenance Engineer, and provincial legislation. Identify and resolve unexpected situations during the shift. Record readings, perform calculations, and log equipment operations and utility usage. Supervise and train Boiler Operators, ensuring effective work relations. Conduct water testing to regulate chemical ranges. Monitor fire alarm systems and initiate campus procedures as required. Perform maintenance tasks, repairing and configuring plant equipment with trades and contractors. Assist in preventive and predictive maintenance schedules. Other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Education: Completion of Grade12 and a SecondClass Power Engineers Certificate and a Refrigeration Engineers Operating Certificate, preferably supplemented by a technical school course in Power Engineering. Licenses: Valid Province of Saskatchewan drivers license with acceptable driving record. Experience: 510years in a highpressure steam plant and large chillplant, including experience as a Shift Engineer or Assistant Shift Engineer; proficiency with computerbased boiler and chiller control systems. Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, troubleshooting, diagnostic, timemanagement, and ability to work independently and in a team. Proficient with MS Word, Outlook, Excel, and reading blueprints. Physical ability to perform manual labor and use hand/power tools safely.
