Tissue Recovery Coordinator (GTA) Reporting to: Manager, Ocular Recovery Tissue Classification: Tissue Recovery Coordinator (TRC) (PT- 0.75) Worksite: Greater Toronto Region Schedule: Combination of weekday and weekend 12hour shifts over a 6week period rotation Trillium Gift of Life Network (TGLN), part of Ontario Health, is responsible for the coordination of organ and tissue donation and transplantation in Ontario. Our mandate includes increasing public awareness of the importance of organ and tissue donation, education of healthcare professionals, and ensuring a safe and effective donation and transplant system in Ontario. This position is based out of the Greater Toronto Region and involves significant travel around the region and, as required, anywhere in the province for the surgical recovery of human eyes. The Tissue Recovery Coordinator role offers the opportunity to develop expertise in the surgical recovery phase of the tissue donation process. Responsibilities Performs the surgical recovery of eye tissue (insitu/corneal excision and whole globe) from deceased individuals Packages and transports tissues in accordance with TGLN and Health Canada standards using aseptic technique As required, assists with the recovery of human heart valves, skin and muscleskeletal tissues Coordinates the tissue recovery process, which includes assessing the medical suitability of potential tissue donors in collaboration with members of the TGLN team Performs the screening, evaluation, packaging and transportation of human tissue, and collection of blood and other test samples in accordance with TGLN standards Performs technical duties in support of the recovery such as medical chart review, blood draw, and physical examination of the deceased as well as other technical responsibilities Works closely with TGLNs Provincial Resource Centre and local healthcare professionals throughout the process to obtain required information and support Ensures all documentation is recorded accurately and completely. Reviews documentation to ensure accuracy, completeness and compliance with established processes Maintains and prepares equipment and supplies Assists with projects and the development of processes and documentation Performs quality control functions related to the role Performs other duties consistent with the role, as required Qualifications Education and Experience University degree or college diploma in health sciences, nursing (RPN), funeral services, pathology assistant, paramedicine, biological sciences or a recognized equivalent is required Four (4) years work experience in a health sciences environment specifically in operating room, pathology, paramedicine, funeral services or clinical laboratory medical setting is preferred or a combination of equivalent experience and education Certification in eye or tissue banking, blood banking or laboratory technology is an asset Experience in organ and tissue donation, tissue recovery and/or processing is an asset A valid class G drivers licence without restrictions and access to a reliable vehicle is required Ability to drive long distances required Ability to work a variety of 12hour shifts including days, nights, weekends and statutory holidays is required Ability to lift parcels up to 35lbs and move patients with similar forces Ability to travel throughout the assigned area and on occasion across the province; may require occasional flights for tissue recovery (e.g., Thunder Bay) Knowledge and Skills Demonstrated superior written and oral communication skills Demonstrated indepth knowledge of biological and health sciences as well as quality assurance and aseptic technique Proven ability to maintain and protect patient confidentiality at all times, demonstrating use of discretion and sound judgment and attention to detail Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team Demonstration of good handeye coordination, fine motor skills and surgical conscience are required Rate of Pay: $36.14 - $45.18 per hour Employment Location: Greater Toronto Area All applicants must be a resident of Ontario to be considered for roles at Ontario Health.
