This position is responsible for providing support to Hawaii Department of Education schools that offer prekindergarten classrooms on their campuses. The position provides professional learning support and assistance that lead to improvements in the knowledge, skills, practices and dispositions of prekindergarten teachers and educational assistants. These improvements result in highquality learning opportunities for children and families. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Child development and learning principles, developmentally appropriate practice, learning progression in content areas (including learning standards and use of learning standards), curriculum design, formative assessment processes and data analysis, application of data to practice, family engagement, observation and documentation of childrens play and work Coaching/mentoring and team building Ability to work in a fastpaced environment, handle multiple tasks, and work well with team members, legislators, department directors, and stakeholder groups Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to speak to groups and effectively communicate programs, policies and issues. Ability to engage in sustained conversations, demonstrate active listening skills (paraphrasing), ask mediating and clarifying questions, summarize key points, and take observational notes Must be able to drive to and from schools and include interisland travel to support schools, teachers, and professional development Duties and Responsibilities Develop and provide professional learning experiences within a specific area of inquiry and related to the areas of teacher role, child development and learning, quality interactions, curriculum, instruction, assessment, and family engagement Use evidencebased practices consistent with the principles of adult learning Structure learning to promote connections between research, theory and practice Respond to each learners background, experiences, strengths and needs, and within the context of their role, professional goals and schools and community culture to facilitate the development of relationshipbased learning and support communities among teachers (professional learning communities) Provide or facilitate access to early childhood professional resources and information for teaching staff based on professional growth plans and teachers inquiry, and for administrators upon request Facilitate communication and coordination between schools and the prekindergarten programs office, acting as a liaison as needed Work collaboratively with the team to establish goals for the prekindergarten professional learning support program; develop plans for implementation of the program; and evaluate program Coordinate work with colleagues and prepare reports as required Engage in professional learning related to early childhood education and adult learning to increase ones own knowledge base and skill set Participate in a professional learning community, engaging in collective inquiry and cooperative learning with peers Participate in action research and work groups or projects with administrators or other early childhood professionals to advance the work of the prekindergarten program, early childhood state strategic plan, and/or contribute to the early childhood profession Minimum Qualifications All candidates must have completed a State Approved Teacher's Education Program (SATEP) to qualify for this teacher position Education: A masters degree from an accredited college or university with an emphasis in early childhood education or child development is preferred Experience: Minimum six years of experience as an early childhood teacher; experience working with adult learners Background: The Hawaii State Department of Education is committed to hiring highly qualified teachers in every classroom. With the exception of designated Career and Technology Education (CTE) positions, the minimum qualification to apply for a teacher, librarian or counselor position is a bachelors degree Additional licensing: If hired without completing a Teacher's Education Program, you have a maximum of three years to obtain a valid Hawaii teaching license. You must enroll in a program to continue employment with the Department. Within each year of employment, you must satisfactorily demonstrate active pursuit towards meeting Hawaii licensing requirements as set forth by the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board (HTSB) Upon hire you will need to have a valid Hawaii teaching license or Emergency Hire Permit. Benefits Compensation: 12month teachers shall be compensated for the applicable Bargaining Unit05 12month salary schedule for working a 12month work year 21 days of paid sick leave, 14 days paid vacation, and state/federal holidays during the school year provided that all conditions under the respective collective bargaining agreement are met Health insurance: If eligible, the State pays a part of the premiums for each employees enrollment in a Statesponsored Medical, Drug, Vision, and Adult Dental Plan Group life insurance: The State provides a free life insurance policy for employees and retirees Premium conversion plan: Participating employees may increase their takehome pay by having the State deduct the cost of health care premiums before payroll taxes are withheld Flexible spending accounts: Eligible employees can reduce their federal and state income taxes and social security taxes through a taxsavings benefit program called Flexible Spending Account Retirement plan: The State contributes to a retirement plan for eligible employees. Generally, employees with at least 10 years of credited service and who have reached 62 years of age or have 30 years of credited service and are 55 years old may retire and receive benefits Tax Shelter Annuity (TSA): If eligible, Department employees may participate in a tax shelter annuity program that allows them to contribute pretax dollars to an employeeselected investment service provider authorized to provide TSA products Deferred compensation: The State offers employees a taxdeferred (sheltered) retirement investment program, an opportunity to build a retirement nest egg through voluntary payroll deductions.
