The role involves physical and mental health assessments, administering treatments and medications, monitoring patient progress, coordinating care plans, providing family education, and acting as an educational resource for Emergency Department staff. Responsibilities Provide direct health care services to patients presenting with complex mental health issues, including assessments and collaboration with physicians and allied health. Observe, monitor, evaluate and document patient progress and behavioral changes; perform a variety of health care interventions. Assess needs during intake, develop care and treatment plans, and provide crisis counseling and referrals. Support admission and transfer to inpatient units, ensuring smooth transition of care. Develop educational resources for patients and families. Act as a nursing resource, resolve patientcare related problems and implement plan revisions. Maintain complete and current patient records, including discharge summaries. Promote teamwork across mental health, emergency, and inpatient units. Participate in nursing research, education and professional development. Engage in quality management, risk management and policy development activities. Perform other related duties as required. Qualifications Education, Training & Experience Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM). One (1) year recent related experience working with patients and families in a mental health or inpatient setting, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Skills & Abilities Comprehensive knowledge of emergency triage, mental health assessment, substance use, psychopharmacology, counseling principles and interview techniques, crisis theory, traumainformed care, abnormal psychology, and deescalation techniques. Effective oral and written communication skills. Independent and consultative decisionmaking ability. Ability to establish rapport with psychotic and crisisprone patients and families. Team collaboration and nursing resource skills. Leadership, organizational and teaching abilities. Competence in operating related equipment (e.g., personal computer).
