Summary: The Head Instructor leads the design, delivery, and supervision of integrated day camp programs at Variety Village. This role ensures high-quality, inclusive programming while mentoring and overseeing instructors and Junior Head staff. The Head Instructor supports campers with diverse abilities, implements behaviour strategies, manages group dynamics, coordinates emergency responses, and serves as a primary point of contact for families. This senior camp leadership role requires strong organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills to maintain a safe, engaging, and supportive environment for both campers and staff. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Create and implements lesson plans. Assist Camp Coordinator and Supervisors with instructor orientation. Oversee all instructors to ensure they are meeting their responsibilities. Conduct evaluations for all instructors throughout the summer. Support campers with diverse needs by applying behaviour strategies, adaptations, and inclusive practices. Lead a group through an activity in a way that is organized, fun, and keeps kids moving. Oversee and coordinate emergency situations. Provide excellent customer service for families and caregivers by building rapport and being able to comment on the child''s day. Maintain thorough knowledge of facility operations and program schedules to support staff and families. Attend weekly staff meetings to stay updated, discuss camper needs, share observations, and collaborate on planning and support strategies. Collaborate with Junior Head staff and support staff to ensure coverage and continuity when the Head Instructor is away (e.g., during breaks or absences). Assist Coordinator in mentoring and developing the skills of instructors. Coordinate with 1:1s to ensure understanding of the program, schedule, and important dates. Other duties as assigned to support departmental and organizational needs. Qualifications and Key Competencies: Previous experience in a Junior Head Instructor role or an equivalent leadership position in a camp, recreation, or youth leadership setting. Strong knowledge of disabilities and strategies to support participants and manage challenging behaviour. Experience in integrated programming and adapted sport/recreation. Knowledge of disability awareness, accessibility provisions, and use of adapted equipment. Valid certification in Standard First Aid with CPR-C. Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Demonstrated leadership abilities and experience supervising staff, co-op students, or volunteers. Previous experience working with individuals with disabilities is an asset. Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks. Dependable, reliable, and professional. Positive, proactive approach to work. Familiarity with facility operations and program schedules to effectively support staff, participants, and families.
