Job Description

The Opportunity: Reporting to the Regional Head of Conservation - Wetland Habitat Asset Management, the successful candidate will be responsible for building and maintaining strong partnerships and relationships with Indigenous communities, Nations and organizations in a meaningful, respectful, and supportive manner to support stewardship projects that advance mutually beneficial conservation goals in a manner that mutually supports community protocols. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Developing and maintaining respectful relations and establishing new connections regarding communities within DUC project areas to conduct meaningful engagement as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment process, which includes maintaining accurate records of consultations, agreements, and community feedback. Maintaining and developing relationships with continued communication with Ancestral Lands holders Ensure alignment with Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action, UNDRIP, and other relevant frameworks. Provide strategic advice to leadership on Indigenous relations, reconciliation, and culturally appropriate practices. Where desired by communities, participate in the development of frameworks to support Indigenous led management or co-stewardship agreements over multiple overlapping Ancestral Lands. Arranging meetings with Knowledge Holders to exchange information to aid in Saskatchewan River Delta long-range planning. Contributing to the program to provide guidance, procedures, best practices, risk management advice concerning engagement and training to build DUC staff competencies and cultural awareness to support meaningful engagement and relationship building with Indigenous communities and organizations. Requirements Educational equivalent to completion of a college diploma in Indigenous Studies, Social Sciences or Environmental Studies (for resource-based sectors) with a focus on communication and relationship-building across Nations. Minimum 3 years of relevant work experience, including demonstrated expertise in knowledge gathering and sharing within an ethical space to support Indigenous-led conservation. Assets Proven experience in Indigenous consultation for environmental projects, including assessments, habitat restoration, and land-use planning. Strong understanding of Indigenous governance, treaties, rights, and land stewardship, including integration of Indigenous Ecological Knowledge (IEK) with Western science. Familiarity with the TRC Calls to Action, UNDRIP, and Canadian conservation policies (e.g., Federal Policy on Wetland Conservation, IPCAs). Knowledge of wetland ecosystems and their ecological, cultural, and environmental significance. Skilled in project planning, reporting, conflict resolution, and mediation with excellent organizational and communication skills (oral and written). Willingness to travel and participate in community events or ceremonies. Advanced training in Indigenous engagement or related fields is an asset. Able to navigate ethical considerations while integrating diverse knowledge systems to inform and enhance the development of decision support tools.
