Description Area: Medical Imaging (Radiology and Clinical Neuroscience) Duration: 2 years (with possible extension for an additional year) Start Date: April-August 2026 Salary: 50,000$CAD per annum, plus University of Calgary Plan C health benefits The Department of Radiology in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Quantitative Medical Imaging in Aging and Neurodegeneration under the supervision of Richard Frayne, PhD. The position is based in the Vascular Imaging Laboratory (VIL) a component of the Seaman Family MR Research Centre and involves significant engagement with the Calgary Image Processing and Analysis Centre (CIPAC). Both centers are located at the Foothills Medical Centre and adjacent to the School of Medicine. The successful Postdoctoral Scholar will work on a project entitled Novel MR Imaging Biomarkers for Detecting Early Change in Alzheimers Disease and Related Dementias that is funded by the Alzheimers Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories (Hope for Tomorrow Research Competition) and the Hotchkiss Brain Institute (HBI) at the University of Calgary. The broad research objective of this project is to investigate the use of normalized population curves of quantitative MR (qMR) measures to identify early markers of risk for cognitive decline and dementia in the aging population. The study will use longitudinal data collected in the Calgary Normative Study over the past decade (McCreary et al., BMJ Open 2020; 10: e doi: /bmjopen Additional data, including from individuals with cognitive impairment will be acquired during this project. Additional information about the research environment can be found at the VIL web site: , Additional information about the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and the Seaman Family MR Research Centre can be found at and Job Description: In the first phase of the project, the Postdoctoral Scholar will complete developing normative trajectories (using GAMLSS package in R) and perform the one and two time-point receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses on each key marker. In the second phase, the Postdoctoral Scholar will evaluate the one and two time-point percentile thresholds on the patient cohorts. Qualifications: Candidates must have completed their PhD requirements within 3 years of the intended start date. A thesis-based PhD in engineering, computing, physical sciences, or equivalent is required. Demonstrated working knowledge of MR imaging processes, including understanding of one or more of image acquisition, artifacts, processing and interpretation. Exposure to some biological or health science-focused research at the graduate level is an asset. Demonstrated ability to 1) program in C++, Python or Matlab, 2) create and use analysis pipelines using scripts, 3) perform quality assurance on pipeline intermediate steps and outputs, and 4) use a statistical analysis package, such as R. Strong experimental skills are particularly valued, as is prior research experience in a medical imaging or a closely related setting. Good interpersonal and leadership skills, and demonstrated communication ability in English (as evidenced by presentations and papers during the PhD).
