THE OPPORTUNITY The Labourer in Parks and Open Spaces perform semi-skilled manual work to maintain turf grass, sports fields, pathways, trails and parks within the City of Spruce Grove. Employees will learn safe operation procedures for hand tools and equipment while assisting Operators, perform manual tasks required in parks operations and safely operate vehicles and self-propelled equipment. Instructions are received orally from a supervisor or team leader and jobs are checked in progress and upon completion to ensure instructions are properly carried out and meet with predetermined standards. Some independence of actions is expected once employees become familiar with duties. Employees in this position are supervised by the Foreman of Parks and Open Spaces. This is a temporary full-time position (40 hours per week) from May 4, 2026, to August 28, 2026. This position is part of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE). The hourly rate for this position is: Step 1 - $22.98/hr Step 2 - $24.69/hr Step 3 - $26.42/hr RESPONSIBILITIES Manual Labour Cutting grass using riding mowers, push mowers, weed eaters, trimmers and edgers. Cutting and removing sod. Planting, watering, fertilizing, weeding and trimming flowers, plants and trees. Assisting cutting and clearing trees. Hauling and splitting firewood. Manually digging/shovelling holes and trenches. Installing posts, railings, and bollards. Repairing picnic tables, park benches, backstops, and dugouts. Manually shovelling and raking dirt, shale, gravel, snow and other materials. Manually sweeping and hosing down surfaces. Sanding sidewalks. Load and unload materials from trucks and trailers. Collect refuse in parks, boulevards, trails and sports fields. Equipment Operation Operating and minor maintenance of light vehicles and tools in a safe manner to complete assigned tasks. Operating a dump box truck to haul material. Other Duties Understand and adhere to City policies, procedures and standards, whether written or implied, as amended from time to time. Contribute to a positive safety culture by always acting in a safe manner and complying with City safety policies and procedures for staff and contractors. Act as a steward of the City''s Corporate Culture by following the ''Values, We Live By''. All employees shall act in a safe manner at all times and will report any unsafe conditions, procedures or acts for the benefit of the City. Continual adherence to the City Safety Policy is mandatory. Employee are expected to stay current on WHMIS and other safety-related procedures. Perform other job-related duties. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma or GED. Physical fitness to perform rigorous daily duties in a range of weather conditions. Ability to follow oral and written directions and interact in a positive manner with internal and external customers. Ability to maintain concentration and alertness in a variety of situations. Knowledge of OHS and WHIMIS regulations. Proficiency with a variety of hand and power tools. Basic awareness of occupational hazards and controls applicable to the work. Good communication skills, both verbal and written Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively in a team environment. Basic knowledge of computer applications such as Microsoft Word. Ability to work as a team member and independently with minimal supervision. ASSET QUALIFICATIONS: Related experience, training or education. Knowledge of standard methods, materials, tools, and light equipment used in the specific work assignments of this class. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Class 5 Driver''s License. Must obtain a satisfactory review of a three-year Driver''s Abstract, with a maximum of six demerits. WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Monday to Friday. Hours of Work may be: 7:00am to 3:00pm or a 4 x 10 schedule. Overtime may be required. Requires work outdoors in all conditions, working in an office environment, working in shop work bays and in proximity to active vehicular traffic.
