Job Description

Our Public Works Maintenance department is currently hiring a temporary Traffic Counter to join our team for the summer months. This position offers four months of employment from May to August, with a great work life balance of evenings and most weekends off, including paid statutory holidays. Our summer staff work forty hours per week, receive job and safety training, and are provided with personal protective equipment. If you enjoy a blend of working outside and administrative work in the office this may be a great position for you. Our traffic counter works mostly on their own with minimal supervision. This position involves collecting and transferring data along with creating reports. In between setting up roadway monitors and data processing, this position works in a team with our maintenance labourer crew, which will bring a lot of variety to your work week. A strong aptitude for learning new computer software is required. You must have a valid driver''s license, able to use GIS/GPS, and work well independently. RESPONSIBILITIES: Sets up roadway traffic counting equipment and monitors operation of equipment. Follows traffic counting routes and meets deadlines for data collection. Able to transfer data and input into appropriate reports. Performs general labour including brushing, fencing, debris removal, painting, trenching, sign placement and repair, and culvert maintenance. Flagging and traffic control as required. Clean and maintain vehicle and tools as required. Provides labour to other departments as needed with supervisor direction. To undertake any other reasonable duty, commensurate with the classification and responsibility of the position, across the department in order to meet service priorities and business continuity requirements. May be required in the event of a municipal emergency to support the emergency operations centre and incident action/recovery plan. COMPETENCY AREAS: Education/Training: Currently pursuing post-secondary education is considered an asset. High School Diploma or equivalent. Licenses/Certifications/Designation: Valid Class 5 Driver''s License Clean Driver''s Abstract Experiences/Knowledge/Skills: Must be 18 years of age or older High computer software proficiency with ability to learn new programs quickly Strong time management skills Ability to perform physical labour Must be able to work independently and with minimal supervision Familiarity and experience with light equipment is an asset Effective communication skills and ability to interact with many different individuals in a professional manner Ability to follow precise instructions Computer software experience using GIS/GPS and web-based reporting programs is an asset Overtime and weekend work will be required when necessary. Successful candidate must be able to work for the entire period of the position.
