RYC Seeking Head Instructor for 2026 Learn to Sail Program May to August The Rothesay Yacht Club Learn to Sail program has a rich history of producing competitive athletes, while offering an opportunity for our youngest sailors to have a positive introduction to sailing and develop a lifelong love of the sport. The Learn to Sail program is designed to develop a young person''s sense of community and belonging at the Rothesay Yacht Club. The Learn to Sail program also has an Adult program with similar goals, with Adult focused learning in both club boats and a keel-boat. As Head Instructor, you will be tasked with providing guidance to both sailors and their families and instructors. You will be ensuring a positive and safe, community-based program, as well as assisting our more competitive sailors to excel. The successful applicant must be a role model for youth, comfortable dealing with parents and adult sailors, and represent the RYC in the greater sailing community. Summary Position Head Instructor - Learn to Sail Program Report To Learn to Sail Director Period Early-May to Jun 15 Schedule to be determined with Head Instructor ( Part Time ) June 16 - August 27 Full-Time Wages Commensurate with experience and certification Application Deadline Interested individuals should send an up-to-date copy of their resume, along with a cover letter, to on or before Friday March 6, 2026 Responsibilities In addition to being employed as a Sailing Instructor and fulfilling the day-to-day responsibilities, below is a list of responsibilities for the Head Instructor. It is intended to be a guide and the position will likely require additional responsibilities. Create a fun learning environment for all sailors; Assisting with the development of the Learn to Sail program in the preseason; Ensuring the correct placement of students in the program; Assisting in the preparation and maintenance of all Learn to Sail equipment; Assist with the training and managing of the instructor staff; Ensuring all levels of the Learn to Sail program are run in a safe and productive manner, adhering to the CANSail programming; Implementing and monitoring all safety plans and policies of the RYC and Sail Canada, ensuring strict adherence to the established plans and providing first aid when necessary; Review, agree to, and sign the Sailing Instructor Agreement, which includes an Instructors Code of Conduct, information relating to hours, pay, sick days, safety, racing, sailing, planning, etc. Participating in all professional development activities, including but not limited to: Instructor Certification Fundamentals Course (Spring - Date TBA) Water Skills Certification Course (Spring - Date TBA) Coach Boat Safety Course (Spring - Date TBA) Wet Feet Certification Course (Spring - Date TBA) Periodic evaluation of instructors; Maintain strong communications with sailors, families, instructors, Learn to Sail Director and other stakeholders in a clear and timely manner; Scheduling additional work hours for staff during Adult Learn to Sail, private lessons, evening races and regattas; Supervising all areas of the RYC that are used by the program; Assisting instructors with the logistics of attending local regattas, including transportation, communications and registration; Planning and running additional Learn to Sail activities; and Various administrative duties, including, but not limited to: minimal bookkeeping, student record keeping/Checklick program, managing social media and marketing of the program. Qualifications Up-to-date First Aid & CPR certification Up-to-date Criminal Record Check Current and certified Sail Canada Instructor - Minimum level CANSail 3-4 A positive, open minded and mature individual Organized and effective time management skills Ability to communicate in an effective and timely manner Previous coaching experience at various levels VHF / Restricted Operator Certificate Familiar with the Sail NB and Sail CANSail Programs Knowledge of 420''s, Optic''s, Lasers and Coach Boats, including operation and general maintenance Expectations Work with the Director of Learn to Sail and other RYC instructors to deliver a quality program for all sailors in a positive manner, ensuring the safety of all participants, instructors, RYC members and the general public; Represent RYC in a professional and positive manner; Effectively communicate with all key stakeholders - sailors, families and club officials; and Ensuring all equipment is kept in a safe and operational condition.
