Job Description Summer Camp Counsellor 2026 Department: Education Reports To: Manager of Education Our Mission: To inspire curiosity through enriching and entertaining experiences of the 1000 Islands Region of the St. Lawrence River Nature and Scope: The Camp Counsellor plays a vital role in supporting the delivery of an outstanding camp experience under the guidance of the Group Leader, Camp Coordinator and the Manager of Education. As a key member of the camp team, the Counsellor will assist in leading activities, ensuring camper safety, and contributing to a fun, positive, and educational camp environment. This position is ideal for individuals who are passionate about working with children, have strong communication skills, and are eager to learn and grow within a dynamic team. Duties and Responsibilities: Camp Programming & Support: Assist the Camp Group Leader in the hands-on delivery of daily camp programming, which includes STEM-based activities, outdoor exploration, and animal education. Help create a safe and fun learning environment by actively participating in group activities and engaging campers in hands-on projects. Assist with the setup and cleanup of activities, ensuring all materials and supplies are available, organized, and ready for the day. Support the implementation of camp themes and special events under the direction of the Group Leader. Administration: Ensure the privacy and confidentiality of all personal information related to campers and parents. Assist the Group Leader in documenting camper behaviour and completing any required camp paperwork related to individual camper progress and needs. Communication & Team Collaboration: Build and maintain positive relationships with campers, helping to create a supportive and inclusive camp culture. Communicate effectively with the Group Leader and other camp staff members, providing input and feedback to help improve the camp experience. Participate in regular staff meetings, sharing ideas and contributing to problem-solving discussions. Provide feedback and updates to parents or guardians on their child''s camp experience when needed, in collaboration with the Group Leader. Customer Service & Role Model: Maintain professionalism at all times by serving as a positive role model for campers, staff, and parents. Ensure that each camper feels welcomed, valued, and included in camp activities. Exhibit patience, enthusiasm, and energy in engaging with campers, and help create a fun, memorable experience for all participants. Be flexible and willing to adapt to various tasks or situations to meet the needs of the camp. Health and Safety: Maintain the highest standards of health, safety, and risk management, ensuring that all camp policies and procedures are followed by both campers and staff. Supervise the daily health and safety of your camp group, including conducting health checks and ensuring that any medical needs are addressed. Ensure that the camp environment is kept clean, organized, and safe at all times. Be prepared to respond to emergencies, administering first aid and following emergency protocols as needed. Sundry Any other duties as assigned by the Manager of Education, Camp Coordinator, or Camp Group Leader. Qualifications: Must be fully vaccinated as required by law and Aquatarium policy, including COVID-19 and any other vaccinations necessary to reduce the risk of zoonotic disease transmission, or provide proof of exemption under protected human rights categories. Post-secondary education related to Child and Youth Care, Recreational Leadership, Outdoor Management, and Education would be considered an asset. Proven ability to read, write, and speak English clearly to follow safety instructions, signage, and communicate effectively with staff and guests. Reliable, punctual, and self-motivated with excellent attention to detail. Able to work independently and as part of a team, coordinating with others to meet deadlines and cleanliness standards. Must be available to work weekends, evenings, and occasional overtime or extended hours for special events. Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 lbs safely, and climb ladders when required. Must be comfortable stooping, kneeling, and crouching. Comfortable working in proximity to live animals and aquatic environments, following all related protocols for noise, contamination prevention, and animal welfare. A minimum of one year experience working in a camp or similar outdoor program environment, with a strong interest in outdoor work. Strong leadership skills with proven experience managing challenging situations, supported by effective time management, organization, and clear communication abilities.
