About this role: The SMT Hand Soldering & Rework Technician is responsible for precision hand soldering, controlled rework, and repair of printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs) in accordance with IPC-A-610 Class 3 and J-STD-001 standards. This role plays a critical quality assurance function within the SMT production environment by ensuring assemblies meet stringent workmanship, reliability, and customer requirements. In addition to manual assembly and rework, this role actively supports SMT machine operations, assists with production setup and troubleshooting, and participates in cross-training initiatives to ensure production continuity and flexibility. Key Responsibilities: Perform high-precision hand soldering of SMT and through-hole components in compliance with IPC-A-610 Class 3 standards Assemble PCBAs using proper soldering techniques, tools, and materials to ensure long-term reliability Work with fine-pitch components, micro-SMT devices, QFNs, BGAs, LGA packages, connectors, and high-density assemblies Use microscopes and magnification systems to inspect solder joints and component placement Apply proper thermal management techniques to prevent component or PCB damage Perform controlled removal and replacement of defective or incorrect components using approved rework methods Repair solder defects including, but not limited to: Solder bridges Opens and insufficient solder Cold solder joints Tombstoning and misalignment Utilize hot-air rework stations, soldering irons, preheaters, and specialized tools Ensure rework activities do not compromise PCB integrity, pad adhesion, or component reliability Accurately document rework and repair actions per quality requirements Inspect assemblies against IPC-A-610 Class 3 workmanship criteria Identify and report non-conformances, workmanship issues, and recurring defects Support root-cause analysis and corrective/preventive actions (CAPA) Ensure compliance with ESD, safety, and cleanliness standards Participate in internal and external audits as required Assist SMT technicians during machine setup, changeover, and production runs Support feeder loading, material preparation, board handling, and verification Provide backup support during machine downtime or low-staffing situations Participate in training on SMT printers, pick-and-place machines, SPI, AOI, and reflow processes Collaborate closely with SMT technicians, programmers, engineers, and quality personnel Maintain accurate records of rework, repairs, and inspection findings Provide feedback on design, process, or assembly issues affecting manufacturability Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to reduce defects and rework Support development and refinement of work instructions and soldering standards Qualifications & Skills 36+ years of SMT hand soldering and electronics rework experience Demonstrated experience working in IPC-A-610 Class 3 environments Strong understanding of soldering principles, materials, and PCB construction Excellent manual dexterity and attention to detail Ability to read and interpret assembly drawings, schematics, and work instructions Willingness to cross-train and support SMT machine operations Preferred Certifications IPC-A-610 (Class 3) IPC J-STD-001 Hand Soldering Certification Working Conditions Hybrid work arrangement with regular on-site presence in Aurora, Ontario. Must be comfortable working in a dynamic, multi-project environment. Requires extended periods of computer-based work and lab testing. Must be eligible under CGP and ITAR requirements (Canadian/US citizen or Canadian Permanent Resident with clear background check).
