The City is committed to the professional development of our staff and invite you to come, grow with us The Fire Safety Educator will conduct various activities in support of fire prevention, public education, department goals and objectives, and special projects. Duties will include: Develop, implement, and deliver public education programs to promote fire safety and fire prevention in accordance with the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, including public presentation displays, distribution of promotional materials, lectures, demonstrations, etc. Conduct community risk analyses, keep accurate data, develop and analyze statistics to determine the viability and effectiveness of public education programs. Organize and coordinate fire service participation at special events and programs. Establish and maintain files, records, and data pertaining to community fire safety as required. Create, maintain, and update social media messaging, content, websites, etc. Responds to enquiries by the public and liaise with other municipal departments, outside agencies, internal and external stakeholders, or regulatory bodies. Establish and maintain partnerships and sponsorships with other municipal/provincial government agencies and non-government agencies in support of fire prevention, education, and compliance activities. Attends public meetings and events as required. Create effective fire and life safety messaging through various platforms. Assist in the development and maintenance of an effective public relations strategy, build programs aimed at community risks and vulnerable sectors. Document fire and life safety educational activities and prepare activity reports, make recommendations to enhance programs. Maintain a flexible work schedule, given a list of events, activity requests, pre-activity requirements, and time allotments. Develop, present, and adapt lesson plans, educational and marketing materials by selecting instructional materials, given a subject, learning objectives, the intended audience, and related resources. Present a lesson, given a lesson plan with multiple presentation methods, evaluation instruments, time allotment, setting, and identified audience. Deliver internal training to raise awareness to department personnel on public education. Other duties as assigned by the Chief, Deputy Chief, or Chief Fire Prevention Officer Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications: Post-secondary graduation from a university, technical or community college in Fire Protection, Fire Inspection, Fire Safety Education, or an equivalent combination of experience. NFPA 1035 Public Fire and Life Safety Educator Level II certification. Knowledge and experience utilizing the principles of public education including child and adult learning principles. Strong organization, communication, facilitation, and presentation skills. Demonstrated aptitude for public education, and life safety education duties including a commitment to customer service excellence. Commitment to on-going job related training and personal development on and off duty when required and to lifelong learning is essential. Excellent written and verbal communication/presentation skills, together with an aptitude for word processing. Physically able to climb stairs and ladders, kneel, bend, and walk for prolonged hours, lift and carry objects of varying weights and meet normal colour vision and acuity standards. A valid Ontario Class ''G'' Driver''s License and the successful candidate will be required to provide a current clear driver''s abstract. Must be proficient in utilizing Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), social media platforms and related software and have the ability to develop proficiency in other corporate solutions. As a condition of employment, applicants must submit a current Police Vulnerable Sector Check (dated within the past 3 months) from their local police service for approval by the Corporation prior to commencing employment. Preferred Qualifications: Education/training in social media marketing, public relations, computer technology is considered an asset. Strong knowledge and ability to interpret legislation relating to Fire Prevention including Ontario Fire Code, Building Code, City by laws, fire alarm systems, sprinkler and standpipe systems, regulations and prosecution and courtroom procedures. Sound knowledge of fire-fighting principles, practices, and equipment, gained through formal training or practical experience. Demonstrated time management skills with ability to handle multiple projects and changing priorities quickly and effectively, to maintain compliance and meet deadlines. Proficient in use of required photography and/or audio-visual equipment. OFM Fire Prevention Officer Program and/or certified NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector Level I or II.
