Deputy Returning Officer(s) Location: Various locations across the 22 Mtis Districts in Alberta. Closing Date: Until Suitable Candidate(s) Found Position Status: Temporary, Between 8 40 Hours Depending on Availability, During the Voting Period The Otipemisiwak Mtis Government is seeking Deputy Returning Officer(s) (DRO) to assist with the upcoming Provincial Womens Representative By-Election, and District Council Elections for Red Deer, Calgary-Nose Hill, and Wabasca-Desmarais Mtis Districts. These are temporary honoraria-based positions to work polling stations on February 22, 2026. Deputy Returning Officers are required to attend mandatory training, staff a polling station during the dates specified, and must be available to return election materials and take part in follow-up meetings on the days following the vote. Candidates should be prepared to work from their assigned polling location within the Province of Alberta, and travel to Edmonton, Alberta, as required. The DROs will be responsible for assisting the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in preparing for and conducting the upcoming elections in accordance with the Elections and Referenda Act. The DRO will be responsible for overseeing the electoral process at one polling location throughout the election period and will be responsible for helping to ensure the election process is carried out in accordance with the Elections and Referenda Act. The DRO will be responsible for the fair and efficient running of the election, including: Overseeing the set up and take down of the polling location every day, Managing complaints, and Liaising with the Returning Officer (RO) on a regular basis. Training will be provided as part of this role, however the DRO will be expected to manage a polling location and team members with a high degree of independence. These roles will involve short timelines for training and deployment to support the voting event. Please be aware that we are expecting to onboard people immediately. Skills & Competencies Excellent communication skills. Proficient computer skills with experience using Microsoft Office software. Adaptable and flexible with changing priorities in a fast-paced work environment. Proven conflict resolution skills. Excellent with problem solving issues that arise. Experience managing a team. Political awareness and sensitivity when interacting with others. Ability to work well with a team or independently. Working knowledge of Cree and/or Michif is considered an asset. Qualifications Must be 18 years of age or older. Knowledge of the Mtis Nation of Alberta, its Bylaws, history, goals, and objectives. Knowledge of Mtis culture and issues affecting Mtis people is an asset. Basic knowledge of elections and voting processes is an asset. Must not be an elected member of the Otipemisiwak Mtis Government. Note: A person who is the spouse, child, brother, sister, mother or father of a candidate for the District Elections is ineligible to be appointed as a Poll Clerk. Other Requirements Ability to travel to Edmonton, Alberta and to assigned polling station. Reliable transportation and a valid Class 5 Drivers License. Availability to work evenings and weekends. On days of vote, Deputy Returning Officers will be required to work 7:30 am 9/10:00 pm. Must be able to provide a clean Police Information Check (Criminal Record Check).
