Position Summary JobType: Full-time, temporary (1 year contract) Hours ofWork: :30am 4:30pm, Monday to Friday Reports to: Senior Fisheries Manager Department: Lands & Natural Resources Working closely with the Senior Fisheries Manager, the Director of Lands & Natural Resources, and the Fisheries team, the Fisheries Engagement Coordinator works to protect and enhance fishery resources within Tla''amin''s traditional territory. The Fisheries Engagement Coordinator provides engagement support amongst various levels of government, including the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), Province of British Columbia and technical committees as needed. Key Responsibilities Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Tla''amin policies, standards, practices and procedures as directed by the Director of Lands & Natural Resources. Maintains confidentiality as required pertaining to members, clients, employees and general matters of the Nation. Understands all Fish sections of the anxegs (Tla''amin Treaty) and conducts review of IFMPs (Integrated Fisheries Management Plans) and marine/fisheries referrals and provides direction for response. Supports the coordination of special projects related to fisheries and fisheries habitat (e.g., toqann Salmon Restoration Project). Serves as the key contact for fisheries related communications from Federal departments, Provincial ministries, and other First Nation governments. Attends and sits on various tables and working groups alongside or as delegated by the Senior Fisheries Manager. Based on findings and observations from working groups and technical committees, identifies and makes recommendations for studies that will support the betterment of Tla''amin Nation Fisheries. Prepares responses on behalf of Tla''amin Nation within established Understands the Fisheries Act , the Species at Risk Act, the anxegs (Tla''amin Treaty) and any relevant planning documents to inform response. Assists with applications for funding to enhance the Nation''s current fish habitat rivers, and address needs and issues in our rivers upon request. Protects and enhances fishery resources within Tla''amin Nation''s traditional territory including assisting with responses to referrals and consultations. Identifies opportunities for participation in fisheries data collection. Works with the Lands Manager to facilitate data collection activities. Identifies training opportunities that come from consultations. Act as a liaison between DFO, the Lands and Natural Resources department, and Executive Council (upon request.) Provides regular updates and briefings to senior managers in the Lands and Natural Resources department. Assists in developing a cooperative relationship with DFO and the Province of British Columbia. Other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Training, Education, Experience A degree in Marine Biology, Fisheries Resource Management, or Environmental Studies. 1-2+ years'' work experience in the provision of fisheries coordination and engagement support for a First Nation. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. Experience creating and delivering presentations to a variety of audiences, ensuring material is adapted as required for the audience. Experience coordinating, designing and facilitating meetings and other gatherings on a wide variety of topics and with diverse groups and/or individuals, including the development of pre-reading and meeting documentation. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Knowledge of Fisheries Act, Species at Risk Act , and associated policies. Knowledge of anxegs (Tla''amin Treaty) . General knowledge of fish species in the Strait of Georgia and their associated life cycles. Ability to develop and document work plans, including ongoing adaptation and reporting. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing Intermediate project management skills are an asset. Ability to build cohesive, collaborative, trusting relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Ability to work both independently with minimal supervision, and as a cooperative and contributing member in a team environment. Intermediate computer skills including MS Office. Working Conditions Work is performed primarily in an office environment with occasional field work. Some travel to attend meetings will be required.
