Job Description Senior Estimator Location On-site / Hybrid Reports To Owner/Partner Position Overview The Senior Estimator is responsible for leading the estimating function for Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) construction projects across residential and commercial sectors. This role prepares accurate and competitive cost estimates, supports pre-construction planning, and collaborates closely with operations, project management, and leadership to ensure profitable and well-executed projects. The Senior Estimator also supports process improvement, mentoring, and estimating standards across the organization. Key Responsibilities Estimating & Pre-Construction Leadership Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing scopes. Review drawings, specifications, and bid documents to determine project requirements. Lead quantity take-offs, pricing, and scope reviews for residential and commercial projects. Develop conceptual, budgetary, and design-build estimates as required. Identify risks, opportunities, and value-engineering options during the estimating phase. Bid Management & Proposal Development Coordinate and manage the full bid process from invitation to submission. Prepare bid summaries, pricing breakdowns, and proposal documents. Review subcontractor and supplier quotes for accuracy, scope coverage, and compliance. Participate in bid reviews with management and ownership. Support negotiations with clients, general contractors, and developers. Cost Analysis & Accuracy Ensure estimating accuracy, consistency, and competitiveness. Analyze historical cost data and job cost reports to improve future estimates. Develop and maintain estimating databases, assemblies, and pricing models. Evaluate labor productivity, material pricing trends, and market conditions. Collaboration & Handover Work closely with Owner/Partner and Division Managers to ensure smooth project handoff. Assist with pre-construction planning, scheduling input, and budget setup. Support clarification of scope, inclusions, exclusions, and assumptions. Provide ongoing estimating support for change orders and pricing requests. Leadership & Process Improvement Mentor and support junior estimators or estimating staff. Help develop estimating standards, procedures, and best practices. Support continuous improvement initiatives across estimating and pre-construction processes. Assist leadership with strategic planning, workload forecasting, and backlog planning. Client & Stakeholder Support Participate in client meetings, site visits, and pre-bid walkthroughs. Build and maintain relationships with suppliers, subcontractors, and industry partners. Support client satisfaction through clear communication and professional proposal delivery. Qualifications 7+ years of estimating experience in construction, with strong MEP exposure. In-depth knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems for residential and commercial buildings. Proven ability to produce accurate, competitive estimates on complex projects. Strong understanding of construction methods, labour productivity, and material pricing. Proficiency with estimating software, spreadsheets, and take-off tools. Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills. Preferred Diploma or degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field. Experience with design-build and negotiated contracts. Familiarity with union and non-union environments. Experience mentoring or leading estimating teams.
