The Centre for Grid Innovation (CGI) at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) is an applied research centre focused on advancing next-generation energy systems. CGI collaborates with industry, utilities, startups, and government partners to develop and validate innovative technologies related to power electronics, distributed energy resources (DERs), batteries (BESS), inverters, microgrids, grid resilience, and AI-enabled energy systems. CGI is located within NAIT''s state-of-the-art Productivity and Innovation Centre (PIC) and is staffed by an expert team of applied scientists, engineers, and technologists. The Centre bridges academic research and real-world deployment by supporting industry-driven applied R&D projects. The successful student will support laboratory-based applied research activities related to power electronics, photovoltaic (PV) systems, and inverter technologies. This role is hands-on and hardware-focused, involving direct interaction with electrical systems, laboratory instrumentation, and experimental setups. Task complexity will increase with training and experience in the role. The work environment includes extended periods of standing, handling electrical equipment, following formal laboratory procedures, and wearing personal protective equipment (PPE). KeyResponsibilities: Perform basic laboratory and experimental tasks to support applied research activities related to distributed energy resources (DERs), energy storage (BESS), PV systems, and grid-connected assets. Assist with experimental testing, measurements, and troubleshooting under the direction of Researchers, Engineers, and Technologists. Assist with laboratory experiments, field data collection, or simulation-based studies, depending on project needs and student background. Support system-level testing of microgrid components such as PV, batteries, inverters, loads, and control platforms. Assist with data collection, cleaning, analysis, and visualization from lab experiments, simulations, or monitoring platforms. Contribute to technical documentation, experiment logs, reports, presentations, and research summaries. Support literature reviews, benchmarking studies, and technology assessments related to DERs, microgrids, and grid resilience. Assist researchers and technologists with project coordination tasks, including experiment planning, test scheduling, and results tracking. Follow laboratory safety procedures and support general lab organization and housekeeping. Perform routine laboratory housekeeping. Skills & Abilities: Must have a strong interest in applied research activities related to renewable energy, distributed energy resources (DERs), and microgrid systems. Familiarity with electrical engineering principles, power systems, or energy systems is required. Ability to work in a hands-on laboratory, data analysis, or simulation-based research environment. Ability to work independently as well as within a multidisciplinary team. Effective time management, organization, and documentation skills. Good computing skills i.e. intermediate Excel skills to be able to enter data and generate graphs, intermediate PowerPoint skills to assist in creating reports and presentations. Willingness to learn and apply new tools, software, and laboratory procedures. Qualifications: Students currently enrolled at NAIT and/or other College or Polytechnic with relevant specialization in one of the following areas or an equivalent background: Electrical Engineering Electronics Engineering Mechatronics Engineering Power or Energy Systems Engineering Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services (WES), International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) or the Comparative Education Services (CES). Remuneration: $ $23.26 per hour, plus 12% in lieu of stat holidays and vacation accrual. (Classification - Student Research Assistant).
