What Youll Be Doing Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, you will lead the firm''''s accounting team and oversee all financial operations of the firm with a focus on accuracy, compliance, efficiency, and strategic foresight. Core Financial Leadership Oversee the full cycle of accounting: AP, AR, billing, trust accounting, payroll coordination, financial reporting, and treasury. Produce, analyze, and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. Provide financial insights to leadership related to profitability, compensation, cash flow, and operational efficiency. Drive budgeting, forecasting, scenario modeling, and long-term strategic financial planning to ensure that the firm is and remains financially sound. Lead financial monthly discussions with the Executive Management Team to provide updates, highlight accounting irregularities and opportunities for cost savings. Law-Firm-Specific Operational Excellence Ensure compliance with all Law Society of Ontario trust accounting rules , audit standards, and statutory obligations. Oversee client trust accounts, retainers, disbursements, and reconciliations with absolute accuracy. Strengthen internal controls, workflow efficiencies, and billing practices tailored to legal services. Manage electronic billing platforms (TyMetrix 360, Legal-X, Serengeti Tracker) and ensure LEDES compliance. Maintain, optimize and know law-firm financial systems including PCLaw, QuickBooks, CMS/Aderant Expert. Leadership, Risk Management and Strategic Support Mentor, coach, and develop the accounting team, ensuring high performance and cross-training. Lead the preparation for external audits, act as the primary liaison with auditors and financial institutions. Monitor and forecast cash flow, capital needs, and banking relationships (general, trust, and credit facilities). Advise on pricing structures, AFAs, cost recovery, and matter profitability. Support M&A evaluations, office location planning, technology modernization, and firm-wide strategic initiatives. Identify financial risks and implement safeguards that protect the firms stability and reputation. Process, Technology & Continuous Improvement Evaluate and modernize accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls. Assess and recommend system enhancements or new technologies to streamline workflows. Improve reporting dashboards and automate recurring financial processes where possible. Partner with administrative departments (HR, IT, Operations, Marketing) to align firm-wide financial practices. What Were Looking For 8+ years of progressive financial management experience , including team leadership. Law firm experience strongly preferred , though suitable candidates with experience in another professional-services environment will be considered. Strong command of trust accounting, financial controls, and compliance frameworks. Skilled in financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and data-driven decision support. Proven ability to build credibility with partners, lawyers, and staff at all levels. Adaptive, solutions-oriented mindset with a calm approach to fast-moving environments. High judgment, discretion, integrity, and professionalism. Advanced Excel skills; proficiency with LEDES billing systems, PCLaw, QuickBooks, CMS/Aderant Expert.
