Overview At Michael Garron Hospital (MGH), learning and discovery are the cornerstones of advancing healthcare. We are seeking an Evaluation Scientist to join our Mental Health and Substance Use program and partner with the Department of Research and Innovation as we build a nationally recognized, community-focused research program. Our vibrant community serves more than 400,000 people in East Toronto, who drive us to innovate, adapt and challenge the status quo. The Evaluation Scientist will directly report to the Director, Mental Health and Substance Use and dotted line report to the Chief Scientific Officer. As an Evaluation Scientist, you will enhance the quality of care in the MHSU program through original and innovative research. The Mental Health and Substance Use Department provides a comprehensive continuum of mental health and addiction services designed to address the complex and diverse needs of the population it serves. The department encompasses inpatient, outpatient, and residential services, as well as community outreach, consultation and liaison functions, emergency psychiatric care, and mobile crisis intervention. Specialized programs include child and adolescent inpatient and outpatient services, youth day treatment, psychogeriatric care, and transitional services for youth. Service delivery is supported by interdisciplinary teams composed of psychiatrists, nurses, occupational therapists, psychologists, psychotherapists, social workers, addiction counselors, child and youth workers, and mental health workers, who collaborate to provide coordinated, evidence-informed, and person-centred care. The Evaluation Scientist will be responsible for developing a personal portfolio of research in support of MGHs mission, vision, and values. As an Evaluation Scientist, the incumbent will also contribute to the quality, safety, and experience of care delivery within the hospital. Education A PhD in a health-related field (e.g., Sociology, Psychology, Health Systems Research, Community Health Sciences, Health Economics, etc.). Qualifications Minimum 2-3 years experience in healthcare research; candidates with experience embedding within a healthcare system are preferred. Ideally the candidate will be within 0-5 years of eligibility for appointment at the University of Toronto at the Assistant Professor level (i.e., early career). Appointment at the University within the first 6 months of the role is a requirement of the position. Demonstrated experience in mixed-methods evaluation and co-design within the healthcare environment, including direct work with patients, persons with lived experience, physicians, nurses, health system administration. Experience working in an academic environment at the University level with strong coordination skills. A track record of innovation and achievements including evidence of successful research funding and first authorship of peer reviewed manuscripts. Experience with computer data management and analysis software including REDCap, SPSS, NVivo, or STATA. Experience manipulating large datasets (e.g., ICES data) is required. Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail. Demonstrated skill in performing academic literature searches and professional and academic writing. Ability to work independently and in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships. High degree of professionalism and respect for colleagues. Ability to manage conflicting priorities and confidential data.
