Job Description

Overview The Durham District School Board acknowledges that Indigenous Nations have longstanding relationships with the territories upon which our school board and schools are located. Today, this area is home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island. We acknowledge that the Durham Region forms a part of the traditional and treaty territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, the Mississauga Peoples and the treaty territory of the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation. It is on these ancestral and treaty lands that we teach, live and learn. This statement was co-created in partnership with the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The DDSB is seeking a collaborative Legal Counsel . The successful candidate will report to the General Counsel and will have the opportunity to work in a full-service in-house practice that provides strategic legal advice and services to the Director of Education, the Board of Trustees, the Senior Team, managers and school administrators, on a variety of interesting matters including governance, privacy and freedom of information, education law, human rights, contracts, litigation and labour and employment. As in-house counsel, the successful candidate will work directly with key client groups in the organization, such as IT and HR, to gain an understanding of client needs and to collaborate on solutions that advance the mission of the DDSB. Capacity and systems building within legal services and across the organization will be an important aspect of the role. Responsibilities Assume carriage of privacy & freedom of information and education law matters. Contract and policy review and drafting. Represent the Board in legal proceedings, including, but not limited to matters before administrative tribunals (eg. HRTO). Assist Human Resources in managing grievance arbitrations. Knowledge and Skills A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion A strong desire to serve the students of the DDSB Strong drafting skills Excellent academic credentials Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment Strong interpersonal and communications skills Proficiency in MAC Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel) Attention to detail and strong organizational skills Education and Experience Post-Secondary University degree in Law A license to practice in Ontario Membership in good standing with Law Society of Ontario A minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience, including experience in one or more of the following areas: privacy and freedom of information, education law, human rights, contract drafting, litigation, and labour and employment law. Additional Requirements Provide a current criminal record and judicial matters check (CRJMC) screening upon hire.
