POSITION SUMMARY: Senior Legal Counsel provides senior-level legal advice across a broad range of matters affecting the Nation and its commercial entities. This role is suited to an experienced lawyer who can independently lead complex legal files while working collaboratively within a growing in-house legal team. Senior Legal Counsel reports to the General Counsel and works closely with Legal Counsel to support organizational priorities. The role includes mentoring junior lawyers and articling and summer students. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Act as lead counsel on complex commercial, real estate, economic development, governance, employment and labour, and regulatory matters. Draft, review, and negotiate sophisticated agreements, including development agreements, joint ventures, leases, and commercial contracts. Provide strategic legal advice to the Head Chief and Minor Chiefs, Senior Management, Boards, and Committees. Advise Nation-owned businesses and support economic development initiatives. Manage litigation matters and oversee external legal counsel. Advise on employment and labour issues, including policy development, workplace matters, and risk management. Collaborate with cross-functional internal stakeholders, including executive leadership, operations, finance, and human resources. Mentor Legal Counsel, articling students, and summer students. Participate in meetings with governments, partners, and other internal and external stakeholders. QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS: Law Degree, and membership in good standing with a Provincial Law Society. Five (5) years or more of post-call legal experience. Experience in one or more of the following areas is considered an asset: commercial and corporate law, real estate, economic development, governance, Indigenous law, employment and labour law, litigation, and regulatory and compliance matters. Strong legal drafting, analytical, and organizational skills. Demonstrated ability to independently manage complex legal files and exercise sound professional judgment. Strong communication, leadership, and relationship-management skills. Ability to work collaboratively and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders. High level of professionalism, discretion, and ethical conduct. Valid Drivers License and reliable transportation. Confirmation of membership with a Provincial Law Society. Oath of Confidentiality.
