Job Information The Staff Lawyer III - Outreach, is located in Yellowknife, and reports directly to the Executive Director, Legal Aid Commission. You will provide legal advice and representation in family law and child welfare matters, ensuring individuals'''' rights and interests are protected in accordance with the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Legal Aid Act. You will lead the Outreach Legal Aid Clinic (Outreach Clinic), which offers point-in-time advice and same-day Duty Counsel services to unrepresented individuals appearing in court. Outreach services are delivered throughout the Northwest Territories on a rotational travel basis, taking into account resources, Community needs and requests. You will also be responsible for managing the Outreach Clinic''''s financial and human resources to ensure equitable, effective service delivery. Key Responsibilities Lead and oversee the Outreach Legal Aid Clinic program. Provide twice-weekly family law Duty Counsel services in Territorial Court and Supreme Court. Develop and maintain a consistent approach to Public Legal Education and Information (PLEI). Supervise the Outreach Court Worker and other Legal Aid Commission staff as required. Knowledge and Skills Strong knowledge of relevant federal and territorial legislation, including: Family Law Act, Children''''s Law Act, Child and Family Services Act, Judicature Act, Rules of Court, Territorial Court Act, Protection Against Family Violence Act, Interjurisdictional Support Orders Act, Maintenance Orders Enforcement Act, Adoption Act, Legal Aid Act, Divorce Act, and associated regulations. Understanding of Indigenous, Aboriginal, and northern issues, preferably with northern experience. Ability to work effectively with Indigenous and Aboriginal clients. Expertise in family law and child welfare law. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with other counsel and justice system professionals. Capacity to respond quickly to diverse legal and social issues. Awareness of legal and social resources available throughout the Northwest Territories. Key Qualifications Law degree and membership in good standing with the Northwest Territories Bar.
