Job Description This position is part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA). Location - This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person work at North Campus, Edmonton. The Canadian VIGOUR Centre (CVC) is a leading academic research organization, located at the University of Alberta, committed to the enhancement of cardiovascular health. Our centre provides leadership in clinical trials of cardiovascular therapies, as well as developing selected registries and informing clinical practice through insights gained from population health data. The Centre''s vision is to generate, translate and disseminate knowledge on novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in cardiovascular medicine acquired through collaborative research to enhance the health of citizens of Alberta, Canada, and the world. CVC is seeking a Senior Biostatistician who will be a leading member of their population-health research team, making a significant contribution to the high-quality research that the CVC is known for. This position is responsible for study design, advanced statistical analysis, quality control and assurance, appropriate reporting of results, and managing large administrative, clinical trial, and registry databases. Other members of the research team include the CVC Directors, CVC Faculty and external (e.g., local, national, and international) collaborators. Responsibilities Research Development (45%) Be responsible for all stages of the planning and execution of studies involving substantial statistical involvement, from study design and data analysis to interpretation and dissemination of results. Collaborate with principal investigators and researchers within the CVC, across the country, and internationally. Publish research findings in high-impact peer-reviewed journals and present at conferences. Identify research opportunities in population health data sources, leveraging these to advance our research goals. Maintain existing and foster new relationships with external organizations such as Alberta Health, Alberta Health Services (AHS), Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), and Statistics Canada, facilitating access to population health data. Mentor and support staff in their professional development. Provide teaching and support to residents, students, and early career researchers. Analytics and Methods (45%) Oversee the delivery of statistical analysis for research projects and programs, ensuring completion on time, within scope, and within budget. Manage analytic resources within a portfolio of multiple, multi-year grants. Clearly communicate the status of projects and programs, including anticipated resource needs, current challenges, and potential issues, to the Co-Director (Population Health) and the Senior Project Manager (Population Health). Work closely with the Co-Director (Population Health) to identify and resolve issues, ensuring the successful execution of research projects. Assist in the development of standard operating procedures and the alignment of statistical methodologies across projects. Collaborate with the CVC Associate Director, Operations and the Senior Project Manager (Population Health) on operational and administrative responsibilities, including staff onboarding, and other organizational processes. Anticipating and Preparing for Future Trends (5%) Monitor and anticipate trends in statistical methods, software, and data management, ensuring the team is equipped to adopt new tools and techniques. Develop training plans to address future methodological and technological needs in population health research. Foster a culture of continuous learning, keeping the team at the cutting edge of biostatistical, clinical, and population health research. Resource Development (5%) Develop and maintain research resources, such as training materials, videos, and websites, supporting the teams research goals. Contribute to the development of statistical methods and tools for population health research. Supervise biostatisticians working on research projects. Qualifications Minimum PhD in (bio)statistics or related field Extensive (six or more years) experience in the design and analysis of health care or clinical trial data and applied clinical research; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered Strong training in statistical methods such as survival analysis, regression, clinical risk assessment, stochastic processes and multilevel modelling Proficiency in data management and analysis using major analytical packages such as SAS, R, Python, and SQL Proven experience with statistical methods commonly used in health research (e.g., survival analyses, logistic regression, prognostic model development and validation, competing risks/multi-state modelling, propensity score and inverse probability weighting, and multilevel modelling) Proven ability to develop novel statistical methodology Ability to work well independently, manage time effectively and perform as part of a research team Proficient command of the English language (written and oral).
