Our mission is to enhance public safety by reducing the risk of harm from misuse of firearms. Role Overview You will be designated a firearms officer and inspector by the Chief Firearms Officer (CFO) in accordance with the Firearms Act. Under the direction of the Manager, Provincial Firearms Office and the supervision of the Operations Coordinator (OC) you will be responsible for administering the Firearms Act, its regulations and Part III of the Criminal Code in Nova Scotia. You will assess public safety risk by conducting eligibility and background investigations and/or inspections and make decisions for or against issuing firearms licences, authorisations or approvals. Where a public safety concern has arisen you will assess risk and decide on continuance or revocation of the privilege. You may be required to attend court to defend your decision or action. Primary Accountabilities Conduct complex investigations to assess the public risk of individuals having access to firearms by researching records and reports and interviewing relevant persons. Make decisions on firearms ownership, possession, acquisition and revocation or approval of privileges as appropriate. Conduct thorough inspections of shooting ranges, businesses, premises or records to ensure compliance with firearms legislation and enhance public safety. Provide advice and guidance to clients and respond to enquiries relating to regulatory compliance. Build strong working relationships with the public, licensees, compliance agencies, police agencies and other levels of government. Perform any other duties assigned as required. Qualifications and Experience You have a bachelors degree in a related field plus a minimum of 1-year related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Recent experience within the past two years conducting detailed background investigations and risk assessments using personal interviews and research is required. You must be able to analyze information and make decisions on whether risk exists or not. Proficiency with various computer data storage and retrieval systems is required. Strong communication skills and the ability to interpret complex legislation for lay persons are essential. A high degree of judgment and accuracy. Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal). Diplomacy, resourcefulness with a focus on clients. Strong organizational skills and the ability to work with minimum supervision. Additional assets: Fluency in French, familiarity using topographic maps, compass, GPS and orienteering tools, recent experience enforcing regulatory compliance. Regular inspections of outdoor shooting ranges requiring hiking over rough wilderness terrain in remote areas suitable physical fitness and mobility essential. Occasional lifting of heavy items (standard-size bankers boxes). Regular travel and onsite work as part of duties. Potential stress due to decisionmaking affecting public safety. Additional Information Permanent, fulltime position based in Halifax, NS. A valid Nova Scotia drivers licence and transcript required. Applicant must obtain RCMP Enhanced Reliability Status security clearance (812 weeks). Must submit criminal background checks and two copies of fingerprints (at cost). Must complete Canadian Firearms Safety Course and Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course within six months of start date if not already completed. Pay Grade and Salary Pay Grade: PR 06 PR 10 | Salary Range: $2,071.44 $2,970.48 BiWeekly (new Civil Service Agreement effective 1 April 2025; current rates apply until 5 February 2026).
