Job Description

Overview The City of Quinte West is situated on the shores of the Bay of Quinte. Located along the Highway 401 corridor, approximately 1.5 hours east of Toronto and 2.5 hours west of Ottawa. Quinte West has a population of over 46,560 and offers a healthy environment with scenic landscapes, safe neighbourhoods and recreational activities. Position: Department: Public Works and Environmental Services Division: Reports to: Manager of Engineering Services Public Works and Environmental Services This department is responsible for the planning, engineering, maintenance, rehabilitation and operation of the municipal road system, parks and open space, solid waste management services, water treatment and supply, wastewater collection and treatment, stormwater management, development approvals and general engineering services. Purpose and Scope The successful candidate will provide assistance in the Public Works and Environmental Services Department. Duties and Responsibilities The position will: Assist in the development and implementation of tender documents for new construction or rehabilitation of municipal road, bridge, water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure. Assist in the development and review of policies, procedures, standards, plans, and programs governing the Engineering Department. Collect and compile data to be entered into the Public Works records database. Inspect capital projects to confirm compliance with City standards. Contacts The position will have direct contact with: Internal: Manager of Engineering, Public Works & Environmental Services and other City staff. External: General Public as well as Contractors and Construction crews. Education / Specialized Training / Skills The position will require: Preference will be given to a student who is enrolled in a Civil Engineering Program registered in a Full time Post-Secondary School Program and who will be returning in the Fall. Valid Class G Drivers Licence in good standing. Proficiency in Microsoft applications. Ability to demonstrate tact and discretion and to deal effectively and courteously in all aspects of the position; to maintain confidentiality, and to foster good rapport and cooperative working relationships. It would be nice to have: Previous experience and understanding of heavy civil construction. Strong communication, public relations, and customer service skills, as well as creative abilities and research skills. Valid First Aid, CPR, AED, WHMIS Certificates. Work Experience Although not required, related experience would be considered an asset. Decision Making This position has minimal responsibility for decision making affecting the department.
