Position: Media Relations and Content Specialist Status: Regular Full-Time Work Area: Communications Posting Date: January 13, 2026 Closing Date: January 26, 2026 General Summary Under the general direction of the Manager of Communications, the Media Relations and Content Specialist plays a leading role providing media relations and content development across digital and traditional platforms, ensuring alignment of District of Squamish messaging across all channels. Through providing timely, useful and engaging information about projects, initiatives and services to citizens and media, this position also maintains a focus on enhancing and upholding the Districts reputation as a transparent, trustworthy and responsive organization. Key Duties and Responsibilities Contributes to the success of our team and community by fostering the District of Squamish corporate values: Respect, Integrity, Connection and Progress. Follows the District of Squamishs Customer Service Guidelines to ensure the Delivery of Outstanding Service. Deploys industry best practices to lead media relations efforts on behalf of the District. Utilizing communication principles, works closely with the Communication Manager to develop and execute strategic communications plans to meet stated goals and objectives for a variety of projects and initiatives. Develops and executes social media strategies and campaigns across current District platforms and develops strategies for new platforms as required. Undertakes social media monitoring/listening to be informed of community conversations and help guide District messaging. Identifies opportunities to write and develop compelling media materials, website materials and brand journalism content for both proactive and reactive situations. Oversees distribution of and develops content for the weekly District e-newsletter. Develops key messaging in both proactive and reactive (issues-driven) situations. Supports the Manager of Communications in advising senior leaders and Council on issues management, as well as spokesperson training and media interview preparation. Creates briefing notes and speeches for the Mayors Office and staff spokespeople. Creates content for various publications and platforms including web, radio, print - both for internal and external channels. Works with online and traditional media to book advertising space. Develops creative briefs for graphics staff. Stands in for the Communications Manager as required. Assists in planning, organizing and setting up meetings, receptions, special events, photo shoots, displays and promotions. On a rotating basis, is on call over the weekend for urgent Communications matters. Supports the Districts Emergency Operations Centre in the Public Information Officer role. Supervises the work of designated staff. Other related duties as required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to deal with people in a professional manner. Excellent organizational skills, the ability to perform multiple duties simultaneously with deadlines and the ability to exercise judgment and work independently. Knowledge and understanding of the Squamish community is an asset. Proven media relations skills, demonstrating a strong understanding of news values. Proven strategic social media skills and experience in managing online conversations. Proven demonstration of critical thinking when faced with a communications issue or opportunity. Demonstrates an understanding of and adherence to communications principles. Meticulous attention to detail especially when proofreading. Proven ability to write creatively for marketing, communications and brand journalism. Proven ability to write and create all elements of a media kit for news media. Possesses strong skills in working with graphics, photos and Microsoft suite of products to create content; working knowledge of Content Management Systems and Adobe InDesign is considered an asset. Positive, can-do energy and attitude. Ability to be on emergency on-call rotating weekends approximately one weekend per month. Required Training, Education and Experience 5 years of progressive experience in public relations/communications and social media management Completion of a post-secondary degree or diploma in public relations or communications Experience working within a municipal government, as well as emergency and crisis management experience is considered an asset Experience in executing traditional and digital strategic communications campaigns OR An equivalent combination of education, training and experience Disclaimer The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this position.
