The Opportunity The Financial Post is hiring an economics reporter in Ottawa to cover the Bank of Canada and issues of national economic and business interest for the federal Parliamentary Bureau . The successful candidate will report on the central banks regular interest rate announcements and other breaking economic news, with an eye not just to the numbers but their significance to Canadians, while producing deeper reporting on big picture economic trends. As part of Postmedias federal Parliamentary Bureau, theyll also report on and forge ties with the political decisionmakers who shape the economic and business landscapes. The Financial Post is Canadas leading business news brand and serves the National Post and Postmedia, Canada''s largest news chain, which includes the Vancouver Sun, Calgary Herald, Edmonton Journal, Ottawa Citizen and Montreal Gazette. What youll do Cover breaking economic news on tight deadlines, including Bank of Canada interest rate decisions, GDP figures, inflation reports and employment numbers Forge ties with economists across the country to help interpret the data and identify emerging trends Report on business and economic issues on Parliament Hill, covering key departments and ministers Generate and pitch story ideas and quickly turn them into compelling content Generate content for all FP platforms as needed, including video and podcast Who you are 3+ years of reporting experience, preferably in financial journalism A passion for economics and understanding of the basics, including GDP, inflation and monetary policy A demonstrated ability to identify trends and drivers behind the news, allowing you to explain not just what is happening, but why and what it means A demonstrated ability to write effectively in different formats, from breaking news to explanatory work to long-form features Experience working in a daily newsroom under tight deadlines Familiarity with Parliament Hill is an asset Canadian Securities Course is an asset Experience with data analysis is an asset Video or podcast experience is an asset Compensation Employment offers presented to the selected candidate are based on a combination of qualifications, experience, responsibilities of the role and the candidate''s location.
