Overview Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) is one of the largest school divisions in Alberta, serving approximately 17,750 students in 43 schools. Location and Organization Human Resources is located at the EIPS Central Administration building in Sherwood Park, at 683 Wye Road. Central Services is comprised of eight departments, in addition to the Board of Trustees. The departments include Education Executive, Communication Services, Facility Services, Student Transportation, Human Resources, Financial Services, Supports for Students and Information Technologies. Central Services is staffed by 190 employees. Position EIPS is recruiting a full-time term certain Human Resources Business Partner with our Human Resources department. The primary responsibilities of this position will be related to employee compensation, including, but not limited to, leading the review of and updating job descriptions, leading the job evaluation process, and advising on compensation-related matters. Commencing February 9, 2026 Ending August 31, 2026 with the possibility of extension 37.5 hours per week (Monday to Friday, 7.5 hours per day) EIPS offers a comprehensive benefits package Open to internal and external applicants Job Summary The Human Resources (HR) Business Partner acts as the first point of contact for Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) staff and contributes to the operational effectiveness of the division. The position responds to employee inquiries, provides guidance, and/or refers to the appropriate area for resolution. The HR Business Partner provides accurate and relevant information and advice to senior management and school administrators regarding EIPS policies, procedures, the certificated staff collective agreement, and personnel matters including performance management. The position maintains employee life cycle events in the HR Management System (HRMS), drafts updates to policies and procedures, conducts workplace investigations, provides input on staffing decisions, supports learning and development, and supports the disability and leave process for employees. The position supports a collaborative, respectful, and efficient work environment that contributes to the departments overall success. Employee Relations Coaches and advises EIPS leadership, school administrators, and employees on all areas of industrial/employee relations including the interpretation of staff and procedures; compensation and benefit programs; and Certificated Staff Collective Agreement and Classified Handbook. Collaborates with and guides supervisors and administrators on workplace planning, staffing, and employee mobility, ensuring compliance with EIPS administrative procedures, Collective Agreement, Classified Handbook, employment legislation and accepted HR best practices Advises and guides employees on staffing procedures and the interpretation of terms and conditions of employment at EIPS. Manages and resolves complex employee relations issues and workplace conflict, facilitating timely resolutions for EIPS leadership and support staff. Reviews and initiates action to resolve employee concerns and escalates as appropriate. Advises and coaches EIPS leadership on performance management guidelines and processes. Guides EIPS leadership on the progressive discipline process for staff, up to and including termination, in compliance with employment legislation and related legislation. Conducts workplace investigations and provides recommendations to the Associate Superintendent of HR or designate. In collaboration with HR Director and the Health Recovery Advisor, supports the facilitation of employee disability leaves, workers'' compensation board claims, short term and long-term disability claims, return to work planning, modified duties, and replacement staffing. Organizational Design and Job Classification Participate in special projects and provides project oversight from design through implementation as required by the HR team and as assigned by the Director of HR and/or the Associate Superintendent of HR. Consult and collaborate with EIPS leadership and employees on the creation and review of job descriptions. Facilitates the job evaluation and job appeal processes according to established guidelines and best practices. Collaborate with ERP Business Analyst to collect, review and analyze data, prepare reports to support HR policies and practices that drive and support HR strategic goals and operational plans. Drive continuous improvement initiatives in key human resources areas such as attendance, retention, employee engagement, strengthening of the front-line supervision, and HR processes. Implement EIPSs administrative procedures and legal requirements while ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and legislation. Research HR trends and best practices to proactively find solutions and strategies in support of the HR goals and priorities. Training and Development Partner with HR Director to develop and deliver organizational learning and development programs such as Leadership Development, new employee onboarding, and employee certification. Partner with HR team and supervisory staff to identify knowledge gaps and learning and development needs. Collaborate with department staff and supervisors to create and maintain HR programs and training initiatives that promote the desired organizational culture for EIPS. Track and monitor employee training and staff development to help ensure employees meet mandatory education and training requirements. Qualifications Education: Minimum Required: Degree in Human Resources or equivalent. Preferred: Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) designation or working towards designation preferred. Experience: Minimum Required: 3 years of progressive human resources experience. Preferred: 5 years of progressive experience. Experience implementing HR related projects. HR experience in an education setting. Knowledge, Skills And Abilities: Knowledge of human resources, employment standards, and human rights legislation, regulations, and best practices. Familiarity with recruitment, job classification, HRIS, employee relations, attendance management, and learning and development programs and best practices. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral. Skills in prioritization, organization, and time management. Strong problem-solving and mediation skills. Advanced interpersonal skills and abilities in consulting and collaborating with stakeholders and EIPS staff. Ability to remain calm and apply rational and creative responses in response to problem solving or conflict. Ability to successfully work in a team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision. Proficient in HRIS systems, Microsoft Office Suite, web-based applications, and emerging technology. Certifications and Designations Preferred: Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) designation or working towards designation.
