Mechanical Engineer Job Type: Full-time permanent Department: Engineering Reporting: Reports to Senior Mechanical Lead Location: Calgary, Alberta - with travel to commercial plant sites (typically up to 20%) Position Summary Carbon Upcycling is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join its growing engineering team in Calgary. This role will support the design, development, and execution of mechanical systems and equipment for Carbon Upcycling''s pilot, demonstration, and commercial-scale facilities. The Mechanical Engineer will work closely with senior engineers and cross-functional teams to support projects from concept development through commissioning and into operations. This is a hands-on role that provides exposure to a wide range of mechanical equipment, process systems, plant construction and commissioning activities, as well as prototype lab-scale and commercial demonstration-scale equipment, within a highly collaborative and fast-paced environment. Key Responsibilities Support the design, review, and optimization of prototype lab-scale equipment, commercial demonstration-scale equipment, and first-of-a-kind process systems Develop and review mechanical layouts, drawings, equipment specifications, and installation packages Support procurement activities including technical bid evaluations, vendor coordination, and factory acceptance testing Provide engineering support during construction, installation, commissioning, and early plant operations Assist with troubleshooting mechanical issues to minimize downtime and improve operational performance Support mechanical systems including rotating equipment, bulk material handling, piping, HVAC, and plant utilities Prepare engineering calculations, drawings, reports, procedures, and technical documentation in accordance with company and regulatory standards Coordinate with process, electrical, controls, operations, and maintenance teams to ensure integrated system design and execution Support Management of Change (MOC) activities and ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and safety requirements Identify opportunities for continuous improvement related to system reliability, cost reduction, and operational efficiency Qualifications & Experience Bachelor''s degree in Mechanical Engineering 34 years of experience in mechanical engineering roles within heavy industrial or operating plant environments (e.g., cement, mining, potash, bulk materials, industrial manufacturing, or construction) Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA Experience with rotating equipment, bulk material handling systems, piping systems, or heavy industrial equipment preferred Exposure to plant construction, commissioning, and start-up activities considered an asset Proficiency with MS Office and CAD software (Inventor preferred) Skills & Competencies Strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles and industrial equipment Hands-on, resourceful approach with practical troubleshooting, farming or automotive mechanic experience preferred Strong problem-solving and analytical skills Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced project environment Strong written and verbal communication skills Collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively across disciplines Strong commitment to safety, quality, and engineering discipline Why Join Us?
