Summer Health & Safety Assistant Location: 11738 Kingsway Avenue NW Edmonton, Alberta Closing Date: April 3, 2026, or Until Suitable Candidate Found Position Status: Full Time (40 hrs per week), Temporary (May-August) The Otipemisiwak Mtis Government is recruiting for a full-time, temporary Summer Health & Safety Assistant. This is a summer term position with an end date of August 28, 2026. Reporting to the Health & Safety Advisor, the Summer Health & Safety Assistant will provide administrative and office support to both the Health & Safety Advisor (HSA) and the Human Resources team. This position will assist with day-to-day Health and Safety activities, including organizing documentation, updating safety records, assisting with incident reporting processes, creating and supporting hazard assessments, preparing training materials, and helping coordinate safety initiatives and inspections. The successful candidate will have strong communication skills, be organized, and able to follow direction while also taking initiative when working independently. The Summer Health & Safety Assistant will support departmental goals in a professional and culturally respectful manner while gaining valuable experience in occupational health and safety within a human resource setting. Key Responsibilities Assist with organizing, filing, and maintaining health and safety documentation and records. Update databases, spreadsheets, and safety logs as required. Prepare correspondence, reports, and meeting materials for the Health & Safety Advisor. Support the collection and entry of incident and near-miss reports. Help track corrective actions and follow-ups to ensure timely completion. Maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive information. Assist with preparing hazard assessment forms, checklists, and documentation. Help coordinate and schedule workplace inspections with relevant departments. Assist with updating policies, procedures, and safety signage as directed. Help coordinate monthly safety initiatives, awareness campaigns, or safety communications. Participate in inspections by taking notes, organizing findings, and documenting observations. Provide general office support to the HR team, particularly for safety-related tasks, as required. Assist with data entry, file organization, and other administrative duties aligned with HR and H&S priorities. Review safety information, identify trends, and support the development of solutions. Abide to Occupational Health & Safety standards, building code, and other local/legal requirements. Present a positive and professional image of the organization when interacting with employees, citizens, visitors, and other external stakeholders. Other duties as required or assigned. Skills & Competencies We are looking for a motivated, confident individual who is passionate about Indigenous issues, has a genuine interest in occupational health and safety practices and values safety in the workplace. Commitment to teamwork and collaboration with colleagues is required. Other skills/competencies include: Strong knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety legislation. Strong planning and organizational skills, with an ability to prioritize daily tasks and long-term objectives. Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines. Strong attention to detail when completing documentation, data entry, and safety records. Ability to identify inconsistencies or missing information. Familiarity with Microsoft Suite applications, Adobe, and Google Workspace. Willingness to learn and develop new skills. Flexible and adaptable, with an ability to switch between multiple priorities and work in a fast-paced environment. Ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including professional email etiquette. Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships. Political and cultural sensitivity. Knowledge of Mtis history, culture, and traditions. An in-depth understanding of the Otipemisiwak Mtis Government and Mtis culture, people, and values is an asset. Qualifications Post-secondary education in Human Resources or Occupational Health & Safety is required. Other relevant training and experience will be considered. 1-2 years of experience in Human Resources is an asset. School or volunteer experience is valid. Customer Service or Administrative experience is an asset. First Aid training is an asset. Training may be required as directed by department leadership. Other Requirements Availability to work Monday to Friday, 8:30 am 4:30 pm. Ability to work evenings and weekends, with notice. Ability to travel throughout Alberta is a requirement. Reliable transportation is required.
