The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has openings for Laundry Aide/Housekeeping Students at Riverview Gardens Long-Term Care Home for Summer 2026. This position will start approximately May 4, 2026, for a period up to August 28, 2026. This position will have no scheduled hours; may be short notice call in, working weekends and shift work. Hours may be up to 37.5 hours per week. To qualify for this summer student position, students must currently be enrolled in school full-time for the 2025/2026 winter term (normally ending April, May or June) and/or returning to school full-time in the 2026 fall term (normally starting in August or September). Job description The Laundry & Housekeeping Aide is responsible for ensuring a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for residents, staff, and visitors. This role combines duties related to maintaining adequate supplies of clean linens and clothing for residents, as well as performing housekeeping tasks to keep the home orderly and compliant with Ministry standards. Job responsibilities Demonstrate Chatham-Kent''s core values and competencies. Adhere to the guidelines and regulations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021, and the policies and procedures of Riverview Gardens, the Municipality of Chatham-Kent, and the Ministry of Long-Term Care. Assist with operating commercial washers and dryers, ensuring proper settings and adequate chemical supplies. Collect, sort, and pre-treat soiled personal clothing and linens; load and unload washers and dryers; fold, segregate, and stack clean linens and residents'' clothing, ironing as required. Deliver linens and clothing to appropriate areas and transport laundry bags to designated locations. Maintain cleanliness and order throughout the Home by following established cleaning routines (daily, weekly, monthly) for resident rooms, common areas, and other spaces. Ensure residents'' beds are made daily, including stripping, cleaning, and remaking soiled beds. Follow infection control procedures to prevent the spread of illness. Collect and transport waste materials to designated holding areas in compliance with regulations. Safely operate housekeeping equipment, including vacuums, floor polishers, scrubbers, floor machines, and garbage compactors. Handle and store all chemicals safely in accordance with departmental procedures. Report any safety hazards, equipment malfunctions, or maintenance concerns promptly. Essential qualifications Must be currently enrolled in full-time studies for the current academic term and/or returning to full-time studies in the upcoming term. Preference will be given to students enrolled in environmental sciences or related fields. Previous experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in a Long-Term Care facility. Experience in laundry and/or housekeeping duties, ideally in a healthcare environment. Knowledge of or experience with industrial washers and dryers and infection control practices is an asset. Ability to work independently and follow established routines and procedures. Completion of Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) correspondence courses in environmental services is considered an asset. Work environment/hours of work This position works mostly indoors This position will work weekday hours, some afternoon hours (4-hour shifts), weekend hours, and be on call after hours and on weekends This position is short notice call-in hours Background check requirements This position works with vulnerable residents in a position of trust and authority, on a sustained and regular basis, in a largely unsupervised capacity. A Vulnerable Sector Screen is required (Fixing Long-Term Care Act section 252 O. Reg. 246/22) prior to being accepted for employment. You must be 18 years of age or older to obtain a vulnerable police check As per the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, all staff members shall promptly provide the employer with a signed declaration disclosing new charges, convictions, orders and restraining orders, consistent with Ontario Regulation section 253 O. Reg 246/22 made under the Fixing Long-Term Care with respect to the period since the date the person''s last criminal reference check under subsection (2) was conducted. Essential Physical and/or Safety Requirements Under the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, all employees must provide evidence of, or submit to, a 2-step TB skin test. Physical strength and ability to lift moderate to heavy objects (up to 50 lbs). Must wear slip-resistant footwear while working at Riverview Gardens. Frequent bending and stooping to load/unload washers, dryers, and carts; tasks may require multiple body positions. Constant walking and standing on level surfaces throughout the shift. Frequent reaching below shoulder level and forward to make beds, grab and sort linens, and handle supplies. Frequent gripping and pinching with hands for tasks such as untangling, folding, sorting, and matching laundry. Safe handling and operation of equipment and chemicals in accordance with health and safety standards.
