Job Description

Reporting to theProgram Manager, the Public Health Inspector (PHI) provides public health inspection services to communities, institutions, and individuals throughout the life cycle for the purposes of promotion of health, prevention of illness and injury, and control of infectious diseases. PHIs are actively involved in the delivery of the following Health Protection Programs: Control of Infectious Diseases, Food Safety, Safe Water, Rabies Prevention and Control, Infection Control, Vector Borne Diseases, Climate Change, Personal Services Settings, Risk Assessment and Inspection of Facilities and Health Hazard Management and Prevention. Responsibilities include inspection and enforcement of applicable sections of the Health Protection and Promotion Act, and its regulations and protocols, the Ontario Public Health Standards, and associated Protocols as well as this agency''s internal policies and procedures, all of which are amended from time to time. Qualifications: EDUCATION Current Certificate in Public Health Inspection (Canada) C.P.H.I.(C) Four (4) year degree from a post-secondary academic institution that is accredited by the Board of Certification of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI) or equivalent KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE Minimum one (1) year on the job experience is preferred Sound base in public health theory, principles and concepts and health education and promotion strategies, environmental health, infectious disease control, epidemiology, and biostatistics Knowledge of applicable legislation (e.g., Health Protection and Promotion Act, Day Nurseries Act, Provincial Offences Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, etc.) and related regulations/standards/manuals/protocols as they relate to environmental and public health Knowledge of and experience working with Public Health Inspection competencies Knowledge of the judicial process Knowledge of information systems and other appropriate technologies including computer usage skills (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint) SKILLS & ABILITIES Ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team including the ability to work collaboratively Investigative, observational, and decision-making skills Good written and verbal communication skills, including facilitation, conflict negotiation and advocacy as well as problem solving skills Teaching, learning theory and adult education principles Ability to participate in program development, management, and evaluation Ability to participate in process of community development and development of public policy Committed to lifelong learning and involvement in professional associations such as CIPHI and its Continuing Professional Competencies Program SPECIAL CONDITIONS Valid Ontario Driver''s license and access to a reliable vehicle Accountable for complying with the Ontario Public Health Standards Adheres to principles, standards, professional/personal boundaries, and codes of conduct established by CIPHI and organization policies Ability to work flexible hours when necessary, including in an on-call capacity Adherence with PHIPA and SWPH''s policies and procedures
