FreeThink Capital (FTC) is an investment management firm based in Edmonton, Alberta, with $1.5 billion currently under management. At the same time, FTC serves as the quantitative and financial research team for the Wheaton Group a broader conglomerate of companies that notably includes a schedule I Bank (General Bank of Canada) and two insurance companies (First Canadian Insurance Corporation & Millennium Insurance Corporation), among others. In this capacity, FTC performs analysis, employs data science, and builds models across a variety of financial functions, including capital adequacy, strategic asset allocation, valuation/pricing and automated decision making. This exciting new role is being added to build upon the nascent data science team already in place which has already driven innovation, business strategy evolution, and process systemization across the Wheaton Group. Most recently, our data science team has researched, tested, implemented and operationalized an automated loan adjudication model at General Bank of Canada. The Opportunity FreeThink Capital is looking for a permanent, fulltime Senior Data Scientist to join a team of exceptional professionals that come from some of the top hedge funds and schools in the world. FTC consists of a small, tightly knit team that values quantitative/analytical thinking, evidence-based decision making, intellectual curiosity and humility. We are looking for an individual who can identify, research, and implement opportunities for improvement using systematic, quantitative insights. The objective for this role is not to tweak at the margins, rather, to identify and tackle high-impact changes to core business strategy. Extending beyond the mechanical traditional data science skills, we are seeking an individual who can work directly with stakeholders to understand business problems/opportunities and develop game-changing, real-world solutions. Position Responsibilities Developing the Generation 2 automated loan adjudicator, via Refining the underlying predictive credit risk models, employing advanced modeling & ML techniques Expanding the scope and business features set to more holistically impact the pricing & underwriting process end-to-end Investigating new business innovation opportunities across the Wheaton group of companies Researching and developing models necessary to produce meaningful financial gains and improve existing processes Bridging analysis and real-world business decisions Working alongside an innovative and entrepreneurial team to help business leaders make data-driven decisions Required Qualifications Fundamentally, we want someone with sharp technical and analytical capabilities, but pairs it with common sense and a laser focus on business outcomes. More specifically, Several years of experience in a data science role An undergraduate or graduate degree in computer/data science, statistics, mathematics or related field Experience conducting large scale statistical analyses using industry-standard tools (R/Python/Stata/MATLAB/SQL/etc.) Can structure meaningful evaluations of whether, and to what degree data science + systemization can improve business outcomes relative to the status quo Ability to navigate the messiness of real-world data & processes Independent and entrepreneurial, but effective at collaborating across all organizational levels as needed Ability to communicate technical concepts and analyses to non-technical audiences Preferred Qualifications Experience implementing machine learning-based solutions Previous experience in a managerial or team lead position Competency in data pipeline structuring and MLOps Previous work experience in the finance or insurance industry is a plus Status: Permanent, full-time Workplace Model: In-office strongly preferred, with occasional remote work to accommodate one-off needs Location: Edmonton, Alberta Compensation: Salary will be commensurate with the quality and experience of the selected individual.
