Environmental Health Services is responsible for solid waste and recycling education and outreach, as well as the strategic implementation of the Community Climate Action Plan and Corporate Energy and Emissions Plan. Under the general direction of the Sustainability Supervisor, the Environmental Outreach Ambassador Co-op Students will perform an audit of the City''s recycling program and educate residents on both water conservation and climate action practices. Auditing of waste materials is largely conducted on e-bikes (weather permitting). Additionally, the Co-op Students will be responsible for hosting the bike valet at key community events and the weekly Farmers Market. Environmental Outreach Ambassadors will primarily work Tuesday to Saturday, with some evenings as required to operate the Bike Valet at community events. Key Responsibilities: Implement actions from the Recycle BC guidelines and 2021 Community Climate Action Plan Auditing of curbside and multifamily recyclable materials Assisting in various climate action projects related to transportation, green buildings and air quality Engaging with residents on waste management, water conservation, and climate action throughout the community at both in-person and online events Develop engaging communication and outreach materials on the topics of waste management, climate action and water conservation Operate the weekly Bike Valet at the Farmers Market and other major community events Participate in the bi-weekly Drought Response Team meetings Deliver annual solid waste calendars to select streets Required Knowledge, Abilities & Skills: Knowledge of local best practices related to waste diversion, climate action and water conservation Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to engage the public and speak in front of a range of audiences Strong organizational and communication skills (written and verbal) Social media content creation Experience with Microsoft Office, in particular data collection, entry and analysis into Microsoft Excel Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and may require long periods of walking and e-bike riding Must be comfortable working occasional evenings between 3:00pm-11:00pm for the City Bike Valet at community events Knowledge of safe work practices related to waste audits and working outdoors in hot conditions Required Education, Training & Experience: Post-Secondary education with a focus in water conservation, sustainability, waste management, environmental studies, environmental science, marketing and communications or related fields Valid Class 5 Driver''s License; Class N is acceptable *Note : A Co-op Student is a student registered in a recognized Co-operative Education program at a participating post-secondary institution.
