This course will examine poverty in Canada: its history, measurement, theoretical explanations, demographics, and impact on specific groups of people. It critically assesses income security programs and services, and explores the role of social workers in reducing poverty through practice methods, policy development and community engagement. The semester class period is from May 4, 2026 to June 17, 2026. Sessional Lecturers that are teaching in person classes are expected to teach 13 synchronous classes throughout the semester in person on campus. Expectations for Sessional Lecturers Preparing the course outline, designing relevant assignments, evaluating and grading student work, and submitting student grades by the required deadline. Teaching course content that follows the course description, established learning objectives, and university academic guidelines. Delivering 13 lectures throughout the semester. Encouraging and maintaining a safe and collaborative classroom environment. Providing regular support to students on course work during office hours, and as required by students. Consulting with the Associate Dean (Undergraduate Programs) on academic or student-related matters as needed. Other duties as assigned. Pay Grade Faculty Sessional Salary Range As per URFA Collective Agreement Status Term Work Hours This course is online (asynchronous) with no days/times. The Sessional Lecturer is expected to offer regular office hours for their students each week. Delivery method, days and times are subject to change.
