As a Computer Data Input Operator / Traffic Counter, you''ll collect, manage, and assess critical infrastructure and traffic data used to plan maintenance, upgrades, and future improvements to our transportation and stormwater systems. This position is well-suited for engineering, engineering technology, or GIS students looking to gain real-world municipal infrastructure experience through a mix of field work, data collection, and technical analysis. You''ll work closely with Engineering and Municipal Works teams, contributing to projects that help keep Medicine Hat''s infrastructure safe, efficient, and reliable. Your key responsibilities Collect condition and inspection data for transportation and stormwater infrastructure assets across the city. Conduct field inspections and investigations, including roadways, manholes, catch basins, crosswalks, signage, and pavement markings. Set up, monitor, and remove traffic counting equipment, ensuring accurate data collection. Record inspection results in City infrastructure databases, mapping software, and GIS systems. Assist with traffic data analysis, asset condition assessments, and local road program inspections. Support engineering-related tasks such as construction monitoring, paint line assessments, sign drawings, and crosswalk evaluations. Summarize findings and communicate results clearly and professionally. Follow Municipal Works procedures, City policies, and safety requirements while operating light-duty vehicles as needed. What you bring Strong organizational, time-management, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently in the field or collaboratively within a team environment. Working knowledge of computers and the ability to use software and technology related to data collection, mapping, and reporting. Interest in municipal engineering, infrastructure, transportation, or stormwater systems. Comfort working outdoors in varying weather conditions. Qualifications Successful completion of Grade 12 or high school equivalency diploma. Possess and maintain a valid Alberta Class 5 driver''s license with an acceptable driving record. Enrolment in, or completion of, an Engineering, Engineering Technology, GIS, or related program is considered an asset. Experience with GIS, AutoCAD, drafting, or infrastructure data systems is considered an asset. An equivalent combination of management-approved education and experience may be considered.
