Job Description

Position Summary A Roofer installs, repairs, and replaces roofing systems on residential and commercial buildings. The role requires working safely at heights, interpreting drawings and specifications, selecting and installing appropriate roofing materials, and ensuring quality workmanship that meets building codes and manufacturer warranties. Candidates may be hired as apprentices or experienced journeypersons depending on qualifications. Key Responsibilities Roof Installation Install new roofing systems, including asphalt shingles, modified bitumen, built-up roofing (BUR), single-ply membranes (TPO, EPDM, PVC), metal roofing, and roof coatings. Prepare roof surfaces, install underlayment, flashing, vents, drip edges, fascias, and related components. Follow manufacturer instructions and project specifications for installation and warranty compliance. Roof Repair & Maintenance Diagnose roof leaks and deterioration; perform repairs such as patching membranes, replacing shingles, resealing flashings, and repairing gutters and downspouts. Carry out preventative maintenance and roof inspections; recommend repairs or replacements as needed. Site Preparation & Material Handling Load, unload, transport, and stage roofing materials and tools safely on site. Ensure proper storage and protection of materials from damage and weather. Quality Control & Finishing Ensure workmanship meets project standards and manufacturer specifications. Perform final inspections, ensure clean-up of the job site, and leave areas safe and tidy. Reading Plans & Communication Read and interpret site drawings, manufacturers'' installation guides, and work orders. Communicate with project supervisors, other trades, and clients regarding progress, issues, and scheduling. Tools & Equipment Use Operate hand and power tools common to roofing (nail guns, torches for torch-down roofing where licensed, seamers, cutters). Perform basic maintenance on tools and equipment. Regulatory & Warranty Compliance Ensure installations comply with local building codes, municipal bylaws, and manufacturer warranty requirements. Complete and submit required documentation for warranties and inspections. Apprenticeship & Training (if applicable) For apprentices: participate in on-the-job training, attend technical classroom training as required, and work toward certification or trade qualifications. For journeypersons: mentor apprentices and junior crew members. Qualifications & Experience High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Proven experience as a roofer (varies by role: apprentices 03 years; journeypersons typically 3+ years). Familiarity with a variety of roofing materials and systems. Ability to work at heights in varying weather conditions. Basic physical fitness and the ability to lift heavy materials, climb ladders, and stand for long periods. Valid driver''s licence and reliable transportation (often required). WHMIS and other safety training certificates (e.g., Fall Protection, Working at Heights) preferred. Certification or registration with a provincial apprenticeship program is an asset where applicable. Certifications & Licenses (desirable) Working at Heights training (mandatory on many sites). Fall arrest / fall protection certification. WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System). First Aid / CPR. Propane/torch training or other specialized certifications for certain roofing systems. Completion or enrolment in a Roofer apprenticeship program. Working Conditions Work primarily outdoors; exposure to weather, sun, and heights. Physically demanding tasks and regular climbing. Possible weekend or overtime work to meet project deadlines. Travel between job sites within Ontario; some projects may require longer travel or temporary accommodation.
