Role and Facility Information Excellent opportunity for a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist to join the expanding Psychiatry department at Kelowna General Hospital. In this position you will be part of a team of dedicated psychiatrists providing inpatient and outpatient child and youth mental health services within the hospital and the steadily expanding local community. Those interested or with experience in DDMH would be welcomed. Facility Kelowna General Hospital (KGH) is one of two tertiary hospitals within Interior Health and is the regions main referral centre offering a full range of services with approximately 400 beds and over 84,000 ED visits yearly. Adjacent to KGH is the brand new Interior Heart & Surgical Centre (IHSC) which opened in 2015 and is BCs only cardiac critical care centre outside of Victoria and the Lower Mainland. IHSC is KGHs principal surgical site and features 9 specialised Operating Rooms created for Thoracic, Urology, Neurosurgery, Vascular, Plastics, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Ear Nose and Throat, Orthopedics, General and Trauma surgeries with 2 ORs dedicated to Cardiac. KGH is also a teaching centre for the Southern Medical Program affiliated with UBC. KGH is entering its third year of training Royal College Emergency Medicine Physicians and also participates in training Family Physicians. Practice Hospital work would involve psychiatric assessment and treatment of patients up to and including 18 years of age, who are usually admitted through the Emergency Department. This service is supported by a Mental Health Liaison worker to assist with access to community-based programs. In addition, KGH is the home to the Interior Health tertiary Adolescent Psychiatry Unit which offers a specialised inpatient program for youth ages 1217 who are struggling with significant psychiatric symptoms, such as psychosis, mood disorders, or anxiety disorders that require an extended stay for assessment and treatment planning. The Adolescent Psychiatry Inpatient Unit has 8 beds and the program runs seven days per week. Length of stay varies between 10 days to several weeks. Evaluation of our patients is carried out by a multidisciplinary team comprising of nurses, youth and family counselors, social workers, psychologists, occupational therapists, teachers, psychiatrists and other disciplines as needed. Our assessment process requires the active participation of adolescents, their families and community Mental Health support services. Duties include but are not limited to: Patient assessment and treatment Collaboration with clinicians and managers Assistance with the development and maintenance of appropriate programmes, policies, and procedures Having active staff privileges at RIH and being the Most Responsible Physician when patients are admitted to hospital Assuming care for a portion of new child & youth psychiatric admissions Participation in the general oncall schedule Community work would involve supporting family physicians, pediatricians, and child & youth mental health services. A collaborative programme exists to serve the needs of youth in transition to adulthood. Subspecialty areas include eating disorders and substance use disorders. Kelowna is also one of seven BC cities to have a Foundry Centre in the community. Foundry is a provincewide initiative that offers young people ages 1224 health and wellness resources, services and supports online and through integrated service centres.
