Job Description

Overview The City of Edmonton is looking for a dedicated leader to join our Parks and Urban Forestry team as the Manager of Play Space and Amenity Services. In this vital role, you will be a key member of the Section Extended Leadership Team, helping to shape the strategy and operational success of our public spaces. You will lead a large, diverse team responsible for the maintenance and care of the structures that make our City vibrant, including playgrounds, skateparks, and spray parks. As the asset owner, you will ensure these spaces remain safe and welcoming for everyone who lives in and visits our community. We are seeking a professional who balances financial stewardship with a passion for people leadership and continuous improvement. Responsibilities Develop and implement annual program plans to meet approved service levels and budgets for play spaces, site furniture, and site servicing Lead and empower a year-round team of up to 130 unionized staff, fostering a culture of safety, excellence, and accountability Act as the subject matter expert and asset owner for playgrounds, spray parks, outdoor fitness areas, and skateparks Manage an annual operating budget of over $5 million, ensuring prudent financial use and accurate reporting Respond directly to community inquiries and Council requests, incorporating feedback into program improvements Oversee the delivery of minor renewals, rehabilitation, and maintenance according to national safety standards (CAN/CSA Z614) Collaborate with internal collaborators and external partners to ensure an integrated approach to service delivery Qualifications Education in Management, Science, Landscape Architecture, Planning, Engineering, Project Management, or a related discipline Leadership experience within a large, complex unionized organization Demonstrated knowledge in landscape operations management and experience overseeing service delivery Assets PMP certification or professional designation in project management Ability to obtain and maintain the Canadian Playground Safety Inspector Certification (CSA-Z614) within one (1) year of employment Additional training in financial management, public administration, or change management Skills and Success Factors Manage Human Resources functions, including recruitment, coaching, performance development, performance management, and conflict resolution Experience working with large seasonal operations and managing external contractors Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with diverse groups, including community members and colleagues Proven ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with collaborators and interested parties Exceptional leadership, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills in a front-line operational environment Ability to diagnose technical information quickly to make informed, timely decisions Extensive knowledge of OH&S legislation, environmental regulations (ENVISO), and best practices in operational maintenance Alignment to our Cultural Commitments and Leadership Competencies (Embracing a culture of equity, diversity, reconciliation, and inclusion Applicants may be tested Work Environment This role involves a mix of indoor office work and outdoor field visits Outdoor work may include exposure to extreme temperatures, precipitation, and dusty conditions Mental demands include public interactions, managing confrontational situations, and high-level sensory attention Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as safety footwear and skin protection are required for field activities Conditions of Employment Up to: 1 permanent full-time position Hours of work: 36.9 hours per week, Monday - Friday Salary: $108,838.80 - $136,046.90 (Annually) This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite This position is eligible for the EDO program (Earned Day Off) Valid Alberta Class 5 drivers license (or provincial equivalent) Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver''s permit The role may necessitate the use of personal transportation to be reimbursed in accordance with the City of Edmonton policy.
