POSITION DETAILS: We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Database Engineer to design, manage, optimize, and secure enterprise-level data platforms. This role blends hands-on database administration with strategic data architecture leadership. The ideal candidate will ensure data reliability, scalability, performance, and governance while supporting analytics, application development, and business intelligence initiatives. Responsibilities Database Administration Lead database upgrades, migrations, and patching activities. Administer, monitor, and optimize production, staging, and development databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, cloud-native databases). Ensure high availability, disaster recovery, backup, and restore strategies. Perform performance tuning, capacity planning, and query optimization. Manage database security, access controls, encryption, and compliance. Troubleshoot and resolve database incidents with minimal downtime. Design and maintain enterprise data architectures (OLTP, OLAP, data warehouses, data lakes). Define data models (conceptual, logical, physical) aligned with business requirements. Establish data standards, naming conventions, and best practices. Support integration across applications, APIs, and third-party systems. Partner with analytics and BI teams to ensure data is optimized for reporting and insights. Architect and manage cloud data solutions. Support hybrid and multi-cloud database environments. Implement automation and Infrastructure-as-Code for database deployments. Evaluate and recommend new database and data platform technologies. Governance, Security & Compliance Implement data governance, data quality, and metadata management practices. Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements (e.g., SOC, PIPEDA where applicable). Collaborate with security teams on audits and risk mitigation. Serve as a technical authority and mentor for DBAs, data engineers, and developers. Collaborate with application, infrastructure, DevOps, and business teams. Participate in architectural reviews and strategic planning. Document architectures, processes, and operational procedures. Required: Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent experience). 8+ years of experience in database administration and data architecture roles. Deep expertise in relational databases, SQL and MySQL Strong experience with performance tuning and troubleshooting complex systems. Strong understanding of data security and compliance principles. Experience in upgrading MySQL database. Preferred: Masters degree in a related field. Experience with cloud-native databases (e.g., Amazon RDS, Aurora). Experience with NoSQL, data warehousing, ETL/ELT, and analytics platforms. Problem-solving and analytical thinking Strong communication and documentation skills Leadership and mentoring mindset Nice to have Experience to convert from MySQL to Postgres and vice-versa.
