Overview / AperuThe Finishing Supervisor (Day Shift & Afternoon Shift) is responsible for leading/ directing the railcar production for assigned work center(s) at the Red Deer location. The person in this role is on the front line and must ensure that employees performing painting, lining, and blasting on railcars have all the tools, equipment, information and training needed to complete their tasks within GATXs standards. Accountable for leadership of skilled labor employees including all aspects of safety, quality, production and cost. Ensures the highest quality work in the most efficient and cost-effective manner possible.Provides direction and motivation to the workforce to ensure performance metrics are achieved. Ensures consistent and fair administration of employee policies and procedures.The Finishing Supervisor maintains a close working relationship with the Production Manager, Service Center Manager, Environmental and Safety Coordinator, Quality Manager and the office clerks. The individual in this role will have a very good understanding of the Service Center metrics and goals. The impact of this position on the business is very important as it ensures that daily safety, quality, production, environmental and cost goals are achieved. The person in this position will have a high level of interaction with finishing employees throughout the daily schedule. The decisions made by the person filling this position are of a highly technical nature in the mid-range of complexity and independent judgment as relates to railcar finishing. This positions primary functions are conducted in accordance with established policies and principles. This position will have a range of approximately 10-15 production employees reporting to it.Responsibilities / ResponsabilitsKey Activities include but not limited to:% Time SpentManages work center(s) to ensure that work assigned to finishing employees are performed in an efficiently and cost-effective manner and based on the planned target to release;Effectively plans, organizes and schedules process finishing to railcarsMentors employees to ensure they perform their daily tasks in a safe manner and abide to all GATX Health and Safety rules and procedures;Maintains an effective workforce by recruiting, hiring, training, mentoring, and managing performance.Performs audits to ensure high quality finishing.Accountable for production.45Uses technical experience, expertise and problem-solving ability to achieve and maintain a quality finish.Maintains an effective work force by ensuring that the employees have the most recent work instructions and are qualified to perform the required finishes;Approves daily time cards from direct reports in LCADevelop ideas for operational improvement and growthSubmit required metrics and documentation in a timely manner25Communicates work area status/activities to the Production Manager. Communicates with downstream departments to facilitate car flow.20Ensures that all necessary administrative work is complete and accurate, including Shop Portal, Schedule Tool, WC POD Accuracy and Labor Collection.Other related responsibilities as assigned10Qualifications / QualificationMinimum High School Diploma or equivalent.Minimum of 3 years experience in a fast-paced production environmentMinimum of 6 months experience in Finishing (painting, lining, and blasting), experience as an inspector, or experience as a Lead Hand.Knowledge of Welding procedures and railcar materials considered an assetNACE certificationPrevious supervisory experience preferred.Knowledge of Association of American Railroads (AAR) and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) rules and regulations.Ability to lead a versatile team.Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally, in English.Strong computer skills, including ability to become proficient in the following:MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)MMSShop PortalECMMISSEMSharePointCitrixGagePackPower BILotus NotesCustomer Spec DatabaseGasket Spec DatabaseeMaintLabor CollectionKey Competencies (non-technical behavioral skills, i.e. presentation, negotiation, customer service skills), in priority order.
