We are scaling our finance function to support growth, standardize processes across entities/projects, and deepen performance visibility. Role Overview We are seeking a hands-on Controller to lead our day-to-day accounting operations and build a scalable finance backbone for the business. You will oversee bookkeeping (AP, AR, payroll, bank recs, month-end), own management reporting and KPI dashboards, help drive accounting system implementations and integrations, and design streamlined, compliant processes across the finance function. This role partners closely with operations, project management, and estimating to ensure accurate job cost tracking and timely decision support. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Operational Accounting & Bookkeeping Oversight Lead and mentor the bookkeeping function; establish standards for AP/AR, payroll, bank/credit card reconciliations, and month-end close. Ensure accurate coding for projects, divisions, and entities; maintain chart of accounts and dimensions for job costing and service lines. Own compliance calendars (HST/GST, payroll remittances, T4s/T4As, ROEs); coordinate with external tax advisors as needed. Reporting & Analytics Build, automate, and maintain monthly management reporting packages (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow, job profitability, WIP, AR aging, AP aging, margin analysis). Develop KPI dashboards (e.g., gross margin by project/service line, WIP schedules, days sales outstanding, days payable outstanding, cash conversion cycle). Support annual budgeting and rolling forecasts; partner with operations to track budget vs. actuals and variance analysis. Systems & Implementations Lead accounting/ERP implementations, upgrades, and integrations (e.g., job-cost modules, timekeeping, field service apps, procurement, expense management). Document and own the finance data model (COA structure, cost codes, classes/departments, project/phase/task mapping) to ensure consistency across systems. Improve data quality and controls; streamline imports, approvals, and reconciliations. Process Improvement & Controls Design end-to-end finance processes that are simple, scalable, and auditable (procure-to-pay, order-to-cash, payroll, month-end close, WIP). Establish internal controls, approval matrices, and spending policies; reduce cycle times and errors. Implement cash management routines (13-week cash forecast, covenant tracking if applicable, payment runs). Business Partnering Provide timely insights to the CEO and operations leaders to support pricing, bids, resourcing, and capital decisions. Support project managers with set-up, progress billing, change orders, retention/holdback tracking, and close-out. Coordinate with external accountants for year-end; prepare working papers and lead schedules. QUALIFICATIONS Designation: CPA (or equivalent) designated or actively pursuing a recognized accounting designation. Experience: At least 5 years in an accounting role with 2+ years in a senior accounting / controllership role; experience in construction, trades, or property maintenance strongly preferred. Proven ownership of month-end close, multi-entity consolidations, and management reporting. Hands-on experience with job costing, WIP reporting, progress billing, and retention/holdbacks. Track record leading system implementations and process standardization. Advanced Excel skills; familiarity with BI tools (e.g., Power BI) is an asset. Strong communication, ability to work cross-functionally, and comfort in a builder role within a growing company. NICE-TO-HAVE Experience with construction/field service accounting platforms (e.g., Sage 100/300 CRE, QuickBooks Online with job-cost add-ons, Jobber/ServiceTitan/Buildertrend/Procore, or similar). Exposure to multi-entity and intercompany accounting. Knowledge of Canadian indirect taxes, payroll, and compliance. Experience setting KPIs and building dashboards (Power BI, Looker, etc.). SUCCESS MEASURES (First 36 Months) Close cadence: Month-end close reliably within 710 business days with reconciled balance sheet. Reporting: Standard monthly reporting pack and KPI dashboard in place. Controls & process: Documented and adopted processes for AP/AR, payroll, and WIP; approval matrix operational.
