Overview Description The University of Calgary seeks a visionary, customer-centric, and data-driven Senior Director of Supply Chain Management (SCM) to lead a campus-wide transformation of procurement, contracting, logistics, and supply chain services. Reporting to the Associate Vice-President, Strategy, Enterprise & Commercial, this strategic leader will modernize SCM operations to deliver exceptional service, operational efficiency, and measurable value for academic, research, and administrative communities. Operating within Alberta''''s public-sector procurement rules, the Senior Director champions ethics, transparency, compliance, and continuous improvement, while fostering innovation and simplification. Annual spend in SCM is $930 million with a team of 45 working across Procurement, Distribution, Corporate Card and Travel. The role oversees a unionized workforce and plays a critical part in labour-management relations, culture building, and operational transformation. The role is also deeply collaborative, working closely with Real Estate, Facilities Development, Facilities Management, Legal, Finance, Human Resources, Athletics, and other commercial, research, and academic partners to deliver an integrated, high-quality campus experience. Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to): Lead a multi-year transformation of SCM processes, systems, and service delivery models to improve speed, transparency, and customer experience. Introduce modern procurement practices, digital tools, and workflow redesigns that reduce friction and increase value. Establish and leverage performance dashboards, KPIs, and service standards to drive accountability, transparency and continuous improvement. Build a culture of innovation, problem-solving, and service excellence across the SCM team. Strategic Leadership & Governance Develop and execute an enterprise SCM strategy aligned with institutional priorities and the University''''s commercial, research, and academic needs. Ensure full compliance with Alberta procurement legislation, trade agreements, and internal governance frameworks. Strengthen ethical procurement practices and ensure defensible, transparent decision-making. Advise senior leadership on supply chain risks, opportunities, and strategic sourcing options. Procurement & Contracting Excellence Oversee sourcing, contracting, category management, and vendor performance across all faculties and administrative units. Lead contracting strategies for major capital projects, research infrastructure, and enterprise initiatives. Apply deep knowledge of CCDC model contracts, especially CCDC 5 and CCDC 30 to support major construction and facility development delivery models. Drive value-based procurement approaches that balance compliance with innovation and responsiveness. Stakeholder & Supplier Engagement Build strong, collaborative relationships with faculty, researchers, operational leaders, and external partners. Translate academic and research needs into practical procurement strategies that support timelines, compliance, and value. Strengthen supplier partnerships to improve reliability, performance, and long-term value creation. Operational & Labour Leadership Lead a unionized SCM workforce with a focus on coaching, performance, and collaborative labour-management relations. Modernize roles, workflows, and team capabilities to support a transformed service model. Foster a culture of respect, accountability, and continuous improvement. Risk, Compliance & Ethics Ensure procurement and contracting practices meet the highest standards of integrity, fairness, and auditability. Oversee contract compliance, supplier due diligence, and risk mitigation strategies. Partner with Legal, Risk, Finance, and Audit to ensure robust controls and defensible procurement processes. Qualifications / Requirements 15+ years of progressive leadership experience in supply chain, procurement, or commercial management ideally in the public sector or a similarly complex environment. Demonstrated experience in contracting strategies, contract negotiation, contract management. Strong working knowledge of Alberta public-sector procurement rules and trade agreements. Demonstrated success leading transformation initiatives that improved service delivery, efficiency, and customer satisfaction. Experience leading unionized teams and navigating labour-management dynamics. Proven track record with major capital project contracting, ideally including CCDC 2, 5 and/or CCDC. Strong relationship-building skills with faculty, researchers, suppliers, and internal partners. MBA, SCMP, PMP, or similar credentials are an asset, but practical, real-world experience in complex procurement environments is highly valued.
