OverviewUnder the authority of the Professional Engineers Act, PEO licenses and governs over 91,500 licence and certificate holders and regulates the practice of professional engineering in Ontario. PEOs mission is to regulate and advance the practice of engineering to protect the public interest.The Complaints Committee (COC) considers the results of investigations conducted by PEO staff into complaints made by the public or members of the Association regarding the conduct or actions of PEO members, licence holders, or Certificate of Authorization holders.(PLEASE NOTE: Participation in COC meetings as a committee member may qualify for Continuing Professional Development / PEAK credit.)Position SummaryCOC members are responsible for considering the results of investigations into complaints about license holders and deciding whether they should be referred to the Discipline Committee for a hearing, dismissed, or dealt with in another way pursuant to the Professional Engineers Act.The COC currently meets approximately 8 times per year, primarily via video-conference. Meetings are typically held in the late afternoon/early evening (Tuesday Thursday). There is at least one in-person training day per year.ResponsibilitiesBe familiar with, and able to apply, the relevant provisions of the Professional Engineers Act (especially section 24), and Ontario Regulation 941 (including sections 72 and 77).Participate actively and come prepared for Committee meetings and training sessions.Review files prepared by PEO staff relating to complaints about the conduct or actions of PEO members, licence holders, or Certificate of Authorization holders.Assist in determining the appropriate course of action with respect to those complaints, in accordance with Section 24(2) of the Professional Engineers Act. This could include directing that the complaint be referred to the Discipline Committee for adjudication, dismissed, or dealt with in another way consistent with the Professional Engineers Act.Review draft non-referral written Decisions and Reasons and other documents prepared by PEO staff for accuracy.Specialized Skills, Qualifications and Knowledge, Asset QualificationsP. Eng., in good standing with PEO and no previous findings of professional misconduct or incompetence, no previous convictions or findings of guilt under the Criminal Code of Canada, Part III of the Provincial Offences Act, or their analogues in any jurisdiction.10+ years of work experience as a licensed professional engineer.Professional competency in one or more of the following disciplines is considered an asset for this position: civil, mechanical, electrical, environmental, industrial, structural.Familiarity with current engineering standards, guidelines and best practices.Demonstrated ability to analyze complex/large volumes of information, formulate appropriate recommendations, and communicate effectively.Ability to work collaboratively with PEO staff, other CoC members, and other partners.English/French bilingual is considered an asset for this position.DurationUp to three years (renewable by Council).Time Commitment Approximately 8 meetings per year, each meeting is typically 3 to 4 hours in duration.Meetings are mainly held via videoconference and generally start at 4 pm (Tuesday Thursday).
