Apply Online by February 19, 2026. Position Purpose: The Carpenter Grade 1 is responsible, under close supervision to repair related carpentry work and may be assigned locksmith responsibilities. This position will assist and provide support in implementing the Strategic Plan. Core Role Responsibilities: An employee in this classification performs duties consisting of, but not restricted to the following: Duties include, but are not restricted to, the installation, repair and preventative maintenance of buildings, fences, enclosures and roadways. Performs all forms of rough and finished carpentry. Operates carpentry shop stationary power tools, portable power tools, heavy and specialized equipment as required. Builds various items using plexiglass, acrylics, mesh, wood, and lay shingles. Performs glazier functions. Performs concrete work including forming, pouring and finishing. Performs masonry work including block laying and repairs. Performs work on elevated structures. Erects scaffolding. Completes set up of tents. Performs all duties of this trade in compliance with municipal, provincial, and/or federal requirements and within standards set by the Toronto Zoo. Assist with and communicate details regarding contractor work on site as it pertains to the area including, but not limited to, projects put forth through the Project Management Office. Respond to and communicate details regarding emergency situations while on site as it pertains to the area and Toronto Zoo policies. Follows all policies and branch instructions. Attends appropriate training courses as required. Technical Knowledge and Skills: Must have high school, OSDD, or equivalent. Must have a minimum of 5 years proven experience in the same or similar position. Must possess an active 403A (Carpenters certificate of trade qualification) Journeyperson trade license valid in the Province of Ontario. Must have Working at Heights, Fall Arrest and Elevated Work Platform Certificates. Must be able to read plans and schematic drawings. Must be able to read, understand, and utilize technical manuals. Experience working with plexiglass and acrylics an asset. Experience in concrete forming and finishing an asset. Experience in masonry work an asset. Must ensure all applicable licenses and certificates remain valid and in good standing. Copies of licenses and certificates to be provided at time of hire and upon renewal. Well-developed interpersonal skills, along with strong communications skills. Working knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS legislation. Must possess an unrestricted Class G driver''s license valid in the Province of Ontario along with a good driving record. Must be knowledgeable in the use of computerized programs and systems. Must be able to work weekends, shifts and holidays as scheduled. Must be able to deal with staff and public in a courteous and efficient manner. Must be able to work in varying weather conditions.
